Challenge 15

In your own space, create your own challenge. Leave a comment to this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My challenge to fandom is to bring back the feeling of belonging to a community to fandom. Make friends with the people you 'meet' online in your fandom. Start communities and band together under a common interest - be it fandom, trope, whatever. Make fandom easier to be a part of, not harder. Fandom was always a little cliquish, but the last few years have made it even more so. Fans can counter that. There is no room in fandom for rejection and condemnation of things that you simply don't like. Don't like it? Move on. The artist or writer doesn't need your input or advice in that case, and they certainly don't want it.

For myself, I think I will try to interact with those on my friends circle here at DW more. I read a lot of posts and don't comment or say hi or anything. I will try, in the coming year, to do better.

Good luck to you all and thanks to the Snowflake mods for another fantastic year of this challenge.

Challenge 13.

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, wild times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I began my fandom-ness in Babylon 5 and Tolkien back in the early 2000s, right after the first LOTR movie came out. I got into some Yahoo groups and wrote both character fic and real person fic. I got tired of the infighting among the writers of both so I made my own Yahoo group - LOTR Adult Fiction. It grew and grew and became Of Elves and Men, a website that was up and running from 2004 onward until we finally had to take it down in 2018 because the hosting site was no longer a good place to have it and I had no way to move it elsewhere. It is now in the process of being loaded onto Ao3.

I told you that to tell you this. I made a LOT of friends in the LOTR fansom and am friends with many of them to this day. From this group, I became involved in an RPG and I played Gil-galad. One day, Gil-galad met another elf named Oropher who was hungry and cold. He took him in, gave him a banana (it was all he had) and some purple socks. After a few weeks, I asked Oropher's person about herself and we became friends - best friends. She lives in Germany and me in the eastern US. Up until the pandemic, she's visited twice a year since 2005 and we've visited her and her family in Germany twice so far. We talk every week and chat online as often as we can.

Sooo - fandom has given me more than I can ever pay back.

When People talk about the evils of the internet, I have to disagree that it's as bad as they say, since it's given me so much!

Challenge #12

In your own space, tell us who you would recast in a film, tv series or webseries, or maybe someone voicing a cartoon or videogame. Or who would you cast to play a character in a book, comic or maybe even your own fiction! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

One is I would cast Samuel L. Jackson's voice in every Nick Fury everywhere. He simply IS Nick Fury.

I am coming up totally blank for anyone else in this one.

I vote Idris Elbe to be the next Bond.

Challenge #11

In your own space, Interact with someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay, so I have interacted with several folks. A new person had friended me and I am beta reading for a person I did not know as well. Go me!

I have met a few of my DW friends here at this challenge or gotten to know them better here as well as seeing some old friends again. I live in a rural area and have no real friends nearby - it's just me and hubby so my internet friends and fellow fandom folk are quite important to me. Snowflake makes it easier to meet a few new people every year.

Challenge #10
In your own space, rec a fanwork (fic, art, vid, playlist, anything!) you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The Dick Pic 'Verse by KandiSheek - This story is all in the form of texts and photos on phones and it begins when Tony Stark accidentally sends Steve Rogers a picture of his dick and from there it becomes a love story and a lovely AU of the Avengers movies. There ARE dick pics but there is so much more to this story. It's a quick read as it's all in text but still quite long. If you're an MCU fan, go read it.

Challenge #8

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This last year was a hard one for me. I finally ended up getting the hysterectomy and hernia repair that I've been waiting since early to get. It was a massive surgery and went much better than I had feared.

Despite that, I still did a lot of writing this year. I didn't make my GYWO 300K goal but I did write 285K and finished 108 stories. You can see them here at Ao3. I even managed to get a troll on my Marvel Bang and had to ask Ao3 to take action and they did!

Challenge #7
In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Since I mostly write Marvel Cinematic Universe right now, here are some places for info:

Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki - includes listing of movies and tv shows, characters, timelines, plot summaries. It's decent place to check facts and refresh your memory on things.

Comic Vine - I use this because the characters and stories all came originally from comic books and this wiki is huge, with stuff about not only Marvel but DC and other comic characters. Sometimes I need some backstory or a villain and Comic Vine is my go to for that kind of info.

The Steve/Tony Multiverse Ship Manifesto & the Cap-IM Slashy Moments List - This is from the Cap Iron Man Group that I belong to - a huge Stony group and since these two are my go-to pairing, there's lots of info here on canon slashy moments in the movies and in the comics.

Challenge #5

In your own space, talk about an idea you wish you had the time / talent / energy to do. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I write a LOT - thousands and thousands of words and what I wish that I could do is write one of those long, epic fics with its own universe. 25-30K is about it for me. I have no idea why I can't seem to do this... could be my natural impatience or my short attention span... but I'd love to be able to do an epic.

Challenge #4

In your own space, make a list of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, and/or that you'd like someone to create or do for you. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I meant to do this one the day it came out and I just felt so blahhh that I have written hardly anything since last week maybe. But here goes.

1. For myself, I would love art for any of my stories, particularly Steve and Natasha ones. You can find my work on Ao3. I also like podfic and remixes. MY transformative work policy is on my profile.

2. For me, I'd also love a beta/fanfic friend for my work. I don't know of those exist anymore. I write MCU mostly but check out my Ao3 link above for other fandoms, if you're interested. I'd love to beta for you, too.

3. I'd love to see more community in fandoms. Back in the heyday of Livejournal and Yahoo Groups, we had a sense of community and friendship that is harder to find today. I'm mostly here at home with hubby and most of my social interaction is online so some fan friends would be fantastic.

4. I would love for fandoms to be more tolerant of all types of writing and writers. Tumblr seems to have brought a strange landscape to fandom - a cliquish, unwelcoming one. We don't all write or read the same stuff.

And that's about it!

Challenge #3

In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Title: Once Upon a Hobbit
Fandom: MCU/Tolkien
Rating: General
Character(s): Bilbo Baggins, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson
Summary: Sam and Bucky somehow visit Bilbo Baggins. How can this be?

I am not big on fusions and AUs though I do one now and again. I actually belong to 2 communities to urge me to do them - [community profile] whatif_au and [community profile] intoabar.

I find I still prefer canon AUs over coffee shop and such.

I wrote the above just for this challenge. I love Tolkien and MCU equally and Bucky mentioned The Hobbit in Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Challenge #2

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I am not really a goal setter.

Having said that, I am a big fan of Get Your Words Out. I did not meet my goal of 300K words last year due to surgeries and medical emergencies so I am hoping to reach that goal this year. GYWO has made me make writing a habit, as well as something I love.

Another goal is to write longer stories this year. Last year, with an impending surgery that was dependent on when Covid allowed it, I did not join a lot of challenges and this year, I hope to do many of them again. I'd love to do a couple of Big Bangs and Bingos, and most of all, finish my MTHs for 2021.

I have several communities here on DW that I'd kind of neglected last year and want to kick start those again as well.

That's pretty much it for me.

Updated my profile Here
and also updated my profile at Ao3

I have a post at the top of my DW that lists and rates books I've read this year, movies I've watched, lists all my fanfiction as well as links and places to find me. It's empty now but not for long. Here it is.
