KNEE DEEP IN VAMPIRES

I really liked him better when he couldn’t remember who he was. He was still big and sexy but now he was more vulnerable, more – well, he needed me. Maybe that’s it. Eric Northman was a big ol’ puppy dog then.

Now he’s just a big ol’ pain in the ass.

I really never meant to get involved with the vampires but they’re so quiet that I couldn’t resist. Now I’m knee deep in them. They all lie. They all are selfish and childish. They all think they’re better than us humans too. But they need me. I know, it’s because of my heritage but I don’t think that’s all.

Bill loves me even if I don’t love him anymore. And Eric loves as much as he can love anyone. Even Pam has some affection for me.

That’s more than I can say for most of the humans I know.

EARTH, A VERY FINE PLACE

Londo Mollari sat in a bar in Zocalo on Babylon 5. He was drinking something the humans called tequila. He’d finally found something from Earth that actually made the planet worth saving.

Well, that and their women. Commander Susan Ivanova was certainly worth saving a planet for. Talia Winters hadn’t been so bad either. Certainly none were as worrisome as his wives… bah, he was better off without that lot.

Then there was cake. It came in all flavors and consistencies. Chocolate, cream, cheesecake, even something called strawberry shortcake. Cake had something smooth and sweet called icing lathered all over it too. It was a delightful food of infinite variety and deliciousness.

Londo finished his tequila, turning the glass up so as to get the last drop. He held it up for the bartender to pour another.

Yes, Earth was a very fine place. Almost as fine as Centauri Prime.

THE OLD MAN AND THE CAT

I paced back and forth, back and forth at 221B Baker Street. I had no idea where Holmes was. He’d been gone for three days without a word to me or Mrs. Hudson. People kept stopping by, wanting Holmes for one job or another. I told them to come back in a day or so, that he was on holiday.

One old man wanted Holmes to find his missing cat. He was a tall, gaunt man a bulbous nose and a very shabby coat. I took his address and told him that Holmes would contact him when he returned. He was adamant that Holmes do so.

I went looking for the cat myself since the old fellow seemed so anxious. I found her in a box at the train station with a litter of kittens. She’d wandered there and the stationmaster had put her in a box. The old man was so grateful that he offered me a kitten when they were old enough to wean.

I did a few other simple jobs but still no Holmes. I finally up waiting and went home to Mary. When I told her about finding the kittens, she smiled and said of course she’d take one.

The next day, Holmes returned without a word. I didn’t bother to query him. He’d tell me what he wanted me to know. He sat in his usual chair and rubbed his hands together. Finally he looked at me and smiled. “So, does Mary want a kitten?”

A DOG’S BEST FRIEND

Sam Merlotte was in his dog form. He was over at Sookie’s house, just watching out for her. She sure seemed to need it, with all the strange creatures hanging around her all the time. He knew the vamps loved her because she was fae and the weres loved her because she was almost a member of their packs.

Why did he love her?

Because she was good. Sookie was one of the few people he’d ever met who was truly just a good person. She’d never condemned anyone for who or what they were.

He headed on home. She looked like she was tucked in for the night. He ran through the woods, his four legs moving faster than he ever could have on two.

Besides, she smelled so nice, the dog in him thought, just before he shifted into the Sam Merlotte that everyone expected him to be.

THE KING’S CHOICE

Aragorn had been king for many, many years. He and his queen, Arwen, had brought Gondor back from devastation to prosperity. They had rebuilt a broken land and tried to govern it wisely. They had raised sons and daughters to rule in their stead when they were gone.

And he was ready to go now. He was tired and old though he still looked near the same age he had when he was crowned. He had aged on the inside if not on the outside.

He feared for Arwen when he was gone but there was little he could do. Just as he had, she’d made her choice. For many years, he’d believed it was the right one but now, now instead of joining her parents in the West, she and her brothers would die and turn to dust, just as he would.

He wondered if it was worth it.

THE ADMINISTRATOR

John Sheppard was tired of Atlantis. He had come to think of it as home. Even to the point of feeling homesick when the Ancients asked the Stargate team to leave. But now he wanted to be somewhere else. Atlantis was parked in the Pacific Ocean, in an area too remote to be easily found by anyone. Way out in the middle of nowhere.

There was nothing to do. Not a single thing. Rodney and Zelenka were running tests to determine if the ship could still fly. Teyla and Ronon were studying Earth customs before they were allowed to move to the mainland to live among other humans. Lorne had signed on with a Stargate team and was going out on missions throughout the galaxy. Almost everyone was busy with some new and exciting mission.

But he was stuck here on Atlantis. He was the administrator and chief of operations for the city, which basically meant that he sat behind a desk and signed papers all day. He didn’t know how Elizabeth or General O’Neill had done it. He didn’t know how anyone did it!

He sighed and pulled another document from the stack. He was so tired of Atlantis.

THE JAR’S TALE

The jar sat on the shelf in the grocery store for a very long time. She wondered when she’d ever be bought. She was a jar of crispy dill pickles, fresh and tasty. Her brothers and sisters had not been so lucky. Most had ended up with sauerkraut or strange things like pickled eggs in them.

She watched people walk by her shelf every day. A mother with screaming twins who looked straight at her but grabbed a jar of sweet relish instead. An old lady picked her up and looked longingly at her. “Too much salt,” she said and replaced the jar on the shelf. A woman scolded her husband. “We need dill *chips* for hamburgers.”

Finally one day a tall slender woman came in and looked at all the pickles on the shelf. The jar was so excited when the woman picked her up and read her label. She was thrilled when she was added to the other groceries in the woman’s cart.

She was still happy a week later when after her pickles were all eaten, she was washed and placed on the table with a bunch of spring’s first lilies resting in some water inside her.

Marcus appeared to be telling one of his awful jokes. Susan was making her impatient face then she laughed and waved him away.

Daniel Jackson was excited by the ruins on P5X-492. They were left by the Furlings. He had seen the writing before but never in such quantity as here.

“Let’s go, Jackson!” Cam was as impatient as Jack, a trait that Daniel couldn’t decide if he liked or not.

“Not yet. Look at these writings! They’re Furling!”

“We need to get out of here. Sensors indicate that we’re not alone.”

Daniel quickly began making photos of everything. Cam nodded and left, but Daniel didn’t even notice.

Nor did he notice when a small being entered the ancient chamber. The being was about the size of Thor but he was stocky and covered in a fine coat of fur. His head was humanoid but his hands and feet were hairy and tipped with claws.

“Daniel Jackson,” the being said softly.

Daniel’s jaw dropped as he turned.

“Furling?”

“Yes. You may call me Mordecai. I only wanted to tell you that we are not disappointed in you.” Mordecai’s eyes were blue and shone with kindness. “Thor always spoke well of you. He was right.”

Before Daniel could remember to make a photo, he was gone.

“Mitchell!” Daniel shouted as he left the room.

All she needed was a nice bubble bath, a stiff drink and to watch a vid about something funny without any interruptions. That’s it! That’s all she asked.

Corwin reluctantly opened his mouth to say something but Susan cut him off. “Not another word! The next person who comes to me with a problem, I will shoot right between the eyes!”

John Sheridan gave her his most charming smile as he walked into the C&C and handed her a sheaf of paper. “Can you look over my speech? I’m nervous since it’s the first one since the day I got here. ”

Susan sighed. “Of course I can. I’m always available. Always!”

THE FABRIC OF THE UNIVERSE

Londo Mollari was a boil on the backside of the universe. Everyone knew it. It was an irrefutable fact in an ever changing world. Even his own people didn’t want him. Why else would they have sent him to Babylon 5, the joke of the galaxy?

Oddly enough, Babylon 5 did seem to want him. When he went on one of his infrequent trips to the Centauri Homeworld, everyone seemed to ask, “When will Londo be back? How long is Londo gone for?”

This was a complete puzzle to Lennier, Delenn’s aide and right hand man. He decided that this was a puzzle that needed an answer so he began questioning people on the station.

Sheridan said he was “a real piece of work, that Londo.” Ivanova said he was “a pain my ass.” Garibaldi just grinned and shrugged. Vir, who Lennier sometimes commiserated with, just smiled and said, “You know Londo.” G’kar just sputtered and said something that sounded so completely obscene that Lennier didn’t dare ask for a translation. The girls in the bars in the Zocalo said he was kind and generous. The gamblers said he cheated but they smiled as they said it. Delenn said, “One must look for the good in everyone.”

Lennier thought a long time and he finally decided what Londo Mollari was. Everyone, it seemed, had an opinion of him, good or bad. Everyone knew who he was. He was simply the fabric that held the world as they knew it together.

Feanor was determined to leave this place, no matter what. Why could they not see that Morgoth must be destroyed, that his stones *must* be returned home where they belonged? Those stones were sacred to him, to all elves. He had been divinely inspired when he crafted them and now the elves wanted to stay here in Aman while the Silmarils were in Arda.

He knew that he could inspire many of his cousins to come with him and that his sons would come was a foregone conclusion. Would they be enough to defeat the fallen one?

He realized that he had no care for their lives as long as he got the Silamrils back. He knew that he could talk them into coming with him. They all listened to him as if he were blessed by the Valar. He knew in his heart that he was damning them all. He had seen it in Nerdanel’s eyes. She never lied to him, never deceived him.

He knew it all but still he managed to take his sons and his cousins and go to Arda, to damn them forever for his own lust and greed, much like that of Morgoth himself.

ON WATSON’S ENGAGEMENT

“Why on earth do you feel the need to marry?”

I have to admit that Holmes sounded more sad than angry. I knew he wouldn’t understand, this man of reason that he was. He certainly never seemed to understand emotion, at least not on anyone’s part but the criminals he chased.

“I like her, Holmes. She is sweet and gentle. She soothes me.” And she did. All the things that Holmes did that upset me, Mary was the opposite of. She was busy and happy in her home, not needing constant excitement to make her content. She looked for the good in men and usually found it.

“What do I do then? Upset you? Anger you?” His eyes were not sad now but blazing with anger.

“You are a most infuriating man.” I stopped. He was infuriating. He made me feel alive, passionate, needed, wanted and he never had to say a word to evoke those feelings. “I shall marry Mary for some peace and quiet.”

What I didn’t, couldn’t say to him was that I would marry for peace but I would always return to him for a reason to live, to love. God in heaven, I loved him!

“He needs you. No one has your skill at organizing and getting things done. No one.” Gil-galad meant every word but he was hoping that the flattery would convince Erestor to give Elrond a chance. He knew the two of them could be great friends. And both of them needed a friend right now.

“You promise I can return when his city is set up?” Erestor asked finally.

“Yes. I promise.”

So he went. He packed his trunk and moved to the Last Homely House with Elrond. He always intended to go home but months passed and then years then finally decades and he was still in Imladris. Elrond had become his dearest friend.

Finally a day came when Gil-galad was no more, falling on the day that they defeated Sauron. Erestor mourned as did Elrond. But they had one another and they got through it. Erestor was sure Gil-galad had known this day would come.
