Fandom: MCU

Pairing: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark
Note: A month-long series of drabbles follows the odd courtship of Steve Rogers and Tony Stark Many years later, in another place and time, two men sat side by side at the controls of a small ship.

“Where are we headed?” Steve asked.

“I thought we’d swing by New Asgard.” Thor and Brunnhilde had moved their people to a new planet several years after they’d killed Thanos and fixed his awful mess. They also had several sons and daughters of their own.

“Natasha and Bucky called me this morning. They have a grandson.”

“Do you wish we had children?” Tony asked Steve.

“I’m perfectly happy with you. Do you?”

“Well, Peter seems to think he’s my son sometimes, so I kinda do have a kid.”

Peter Parker was a brilliant superhero in his own right and Earth’s strongest protector these days. Tony was endlessly proud of the man he’d become.

Barton had married Phil Coulson, of all things, and they raised his kids in the farmhouse where’d Barton had lived with Laura, who had not been taken by Thanos, but killed in an accident caused by Thanos instead.

Banner had found Betty Ross and they’d moved to India to serve as doctors in small rural villages without easy access to health care. Stark Industries paid the bills.

Wanda had moved back to her home country. She ran a foundation for orphans of war in the name of her brother and Vision.

Pepper had married Jim Rhodes. They were quite happy. He helped her run SI and called Tony every week, wherever he was.

Carol Danvers was known as Captain Marvel and she had spent years rescuing people all over the galaxy. She spent some time with them now and again, catching up and eating cheeseburgers with Tony.

Fury had died an old man several years ago and had been buried where his empty grave had stood for many years. Maria had retired from SHIELD and became military advisor to Wakanda, of all things. Rumor had that she and General Okoye were an item.

Steve and Tony had left Earth after the battle with Thanos and seldom went back. They bought a small ship and wandered the galaxy, two retired heroes, enjoying the time they had together. Steve still looked younger than Tony, but he’d aged, too. Tony was a very handsome sixty something and Steve was an equally handsome hundred and twenty something.

“Have I told you today how much I love you?” Steve asked Tony.in a loosely connected fashion.

The next afternoon, they rolled out the sex sounds for the others. Half an hour later, they came strolling in the common room together. Natasha was laughing and trying not to show it. Her hand was over her mouth and her shoulders shook. Bruce turned pink. Thor clapped Tony on the back and winked at Steve.
Rhodes and Barton toasted one another and drank deep.

“What ya been doin?” Natasha asked in a singsong voice.

“Working on Cap’s suit. What’s the movie tonight?”

“Brokeback Mountain,” Barton said without missing a beat.

Tony grinned at Steve. They hadn’t played the tape.

They lay side by side, both still trying to catch their breath, Tony more than Steve.

“Was it worth it?” Tony asked, a bit unsure still.

Steve looked over at him. “Of course it was.” He reached for Tony’s hand.

“You know this isn’t just a fling for me, right?” Tony asked. Steve knew about the parade of people he’d bedded over the years.

“I do. Not for me either. We’re both old enough to know what we want.”

“The others will be thrilled,” Tony said. “You do sound like you did on the sex tape.”

“Told you.” Steve laughed.

They shoved things to the floor as they moved onto the bed. They never took their eyes from one another and their kisses seemed endless as their hands began to wander.

“You want this? You want me, right?” Tony asked, suddenly unsure.

“I’m here in your bed, naked. What do you think?” Steve answered and pulled him close for yet another kiss.

Tony didn’t say much after that. He was quite busy touching and kissing Steve’s now quivering body all over. Steve began to make some of the sounds from the tape as Tony’s hungry kisses moved further down.

“Yes…”

“Are you finished, sir?” JARVIS interrupted their kissing.

Tony abruptly pulled away. “What? Oh yeah, let’s hear it.”

JARVIS played it.

Steve felt like he was on fire. He wanted to feel Tony’s naked skin against his when he heard the sounds next. He was ready when Tony said, “Why don’t we go to my place for a bit before we play this for the others?”

Steve nodded and followed.

Tony’s bedroom was a mess. There were food wrappers, comic books, dirty clothes and other assorted junk all over. Neither of them noticed a thing as they began to strip.

Steve went from the kitchen to Tony’s workshop.

“Rhodes and the others are plotting,” he told Tony as he opened the door.

“Plotting what?” Tony looked up a diagram.

“How to get us together.”

“I thought we were already doing that. I remember kissing you several times last night,” Tony said with a smile.

Steve licked his lip. ”Apparently not fast enough for our friends.”

“Maybe we should give them something to think about.” Tony grinned wickedly at Steve.

“What do you have in mind?” Steve liked the sound of that.

“How good are you at sex sounds?”

Steve blushed.

Tony grinned and told him his idea. “We’ll let JARVIS accidentally broadcast us making sounds, then we’ll walk into the room while they’re listening.”

Steve agreed. “Let’s do it now.”

Tony told JARVIS what he wanted done and turned to Steve. “Ready?”

Steve nodded and, to his surprise, Tony leaned forward on his stool and kissed him. “Oh!”

They forgot their noise project for a few minutes as they kissed, but soon got back on track, making a recording of moans, groans and several ‘oh god’s from both of them.

By the time they were done, Steve was flushed and Tony was breathing hard. “So is that the sound you really make when you, uh, get off?” Tony asked.

Steve’s flush grew into a true, bright pink blush. He wouldn’t look at Tony, but he nodded.

“Oh shit,” Tony whispered.

Neither of them spoke or moved for a long minute, then Tony spoke. “I’d love to hear it again for real.”

Suddenly he and Steve were sitting too far apart on the stools at Tony’s workspace. He slipped off the stool and moved to stand in front of Steve.

“We can do that,” Steve murmured just before Tony kissed him.

Rhodes was having breakfast with Banner the next morning. Cereal was the food of the day, from their choices anyway.

“Do Cap and Stark know they're a thing?” he asked Bruce, as he looked at cereal in the cabinet.

“I think they're getting an idea finally. They've been mooning over one another for months now. We've all had to put up with them.”

“Tony deserves love. He's a good man. His life has been harder than anyone knows. Being a child prodigy isn't an easy thing, especially Howard Stark's child.” Rhodey knew from experience, having known Tony longer than anyone else.

“We need to make sure they don't screw it up then, don't we?”

Jim laughed. “Just what I was thinking. Any ideas?”

“Maybe we accidentally lock them in together somewhere,” Bruce said as he poured Jim a coffee.

“I got the idea they knew what to do last night. They were kissing every time they thought I wasn't looking.” Both men laughed. “I think Steve is a little shy and Tony is simply dense sometimes.”

“Maybe they just need a little encouragement then.” Bruce poured himself a juice. He tried to stay away from anything that might encourage the other guy, like caffeine.

“How do we do that?” Rhodes asked.

“Natasha and Pepper will know what to do.” Bruce knew he was useless at relationship stuff.

“We'll know what to do about what?” Natasha said, as she walked into the kitchen. She smelled Rhodes' coffee, then poured herself a cup.

“Fix Stark and Cap up.”

“They're getting there themselves. They're just a bit slow,” she told them. “I do keep urging Steve along.”

“Tell them to hurry. We're not getting any younger here.” Rhodes said.

“Tell who to hurry?” Steve asked as he came into the kitchen.

Everyone blushed.

Summary: Someone unexpected shows up and the date doesn't go as planned.

The date did not turn out as planned. They had company. Rhodey popped in from DC. When Steve arrived at Tony’s, Tony smiled brightly and said, “Look who’s here. Rhodey came down to harass us with some crap from Ross.”

Rhodes smiled. “Rogers.”

Jim Rhodes was no fool; he could see the sparks between his old pal and Rogers. Hmmm, there had been some rumors at MIT and over the years that Tony went both ways. He’d better keep this from Ross. He would have them both crucified in the public if he got wind of anything.

“Um, I, if you two have plans, I can annoy Banner or something,” he finally said.

Tony looked startled. “We were just going to watch a movie. You’re welcome to join us.”

“You do know I am not stupid, right?” Rhodes asked.

“What do you mean?” Steve asked. “We were going to talk about my suit.”

Jim laughed. “So how long you two been a thing?”

Steve looked like he might run. Tony blushed. Tony blushed?

“We, us, we’re not a -” Steve started.

“Actually, we kinda are,” Tony finished. “We are seeing how things go and taking it slow.”

Jim knew that Tony had probably not actually dated anyone since college, if he even dated anyone then. His life had been an unending stream of nameless partners who simply wanted a piece of him. That he was ‘dating’ Captain America was amazing.

And funny.

He started laughing like a lunatic. Soon both other men were laughing with him. They finally all sat on the sofa and Tony found beers for everyone. He called out for a pizza. Jim pretended he hadn’t seen them kissing when he got back from the bathroom once.

He pretended he hadn’t seen them kissing as he left, either.

The two of them circled one another for several days without another date. There were some monsters to catch in Brooklyn, which turned out to be enhanced persons bent on larceny. DC called for Steve to come down for a meeting. Tony had to dash to California on business.

A week passed with no dates.

They were home on a Friday evening. Steve was reading Ellison’s The Invisible Man in the common room. Tony had been in his workshop, tinkering on some weaponry for Steve’s suit when he decided to find some food. He was on his way to the kitchen when he saw Steve reading. He stuck his head in the door.

“What’s up?”

Steve looked up and closed his book. “Just taking advantage of some quiet time.”

“Haven’t seen you since the thing in Brooklyn.”

“You know, work,” Steve said, suddenly a little shy.

“Wanna come to my place this evening? We can watch a movie or…”

“Or?”

“Um, well, we can do whatever…”

“Sure, whatever,” Steve answered.

“About eight?” Tony asked.

“Sounds good.”

“I’ll order some food.”

“Great.”

Tony took off. Steve let out a breath, then wondered what whatever really meant. He’s find out soon enough.

“No.”

“Has he?”

“Um, no. I’m old fashioned,” he told her.

“You’re scared and so is he. Take the plunge, Steve.”

He looked at his hands. “I don’t want to scare him away, Natasha.”

On July 4th, Tony took Steve out to lunch.

“It’s not every day you get to celebrate someone’s 92nd birthday, especially one who looks as good as you do,” Tony told him as they went into a tiny diner out in Queens. “I used to come here with Jarvis when I was little.”

They ate burgers, fries and milkshakes.

Tony handed Steve a card. He opened it and inside was a letter, explaining the backpay and a deposit ticket, detailing the amount. Steve dropped it on the table and stared at Tony. “How?”

“Made a few calls.”

“What am going to do with this?”

“Anything you want, Steve.”

“I really don’t need much, certainly not this much.”

Tony smiled at him. “New clothes. Spend some on something other than grandpa clothes.”

Steve looked offended, but he wasn’t really. “What’s wrong with my clothes?”

“On you, even grandpa clothes look good, but something a little more – modern, maybe?”

“So help me find some clothes?”

Tony knew that would be an awful idea, seeing Steve in various states of undress as he tried on clothes. What could possibly go wrong?

He smiled brightly at Steve. “I’d love to. We can go now.”

Tony called Rhodey. “I know Cap works for SHIELD and is paid for that, but did anyone actually pay him for his time in the ice?”

“I can look into it. I’m pretty sure if he hasn’t asked that no one has offered him anything. The government doesn’t work that way,” Rhodes told him.

Two days later, Rhodes called. “They never offered anything, just put him on the payroll. Did he ask about this?”

“No. My idea. We were riding around and he mentioned not being able to afford an apartment in Brooklyn and it got me to wondering.”

He could hear the smile in Rhodey’s voice. “Riding around, huh?”

“Yeah, riding around. We do that now.”

“Call Pepper. Tell her to look into it,” Rhodey advised. “They’ll pay attention to her.”

Tony called Pepper next. She promised to look into it right away. She called Tony back within the hour.

“Okay, I got this agreement from the DOD. They will settle with Captain Rogers for a lump sum of 5 million dollars. This is based on his pay during WWII. They will issue it, tax free, as a one-time payment. He will still get his salary and any benefits he has as a SHIELD agent as well.”

“I’ll talk to him,” Tony said.

“He didn’t ask for this, did he?” Pepper asked.

“No, but he is owed even more than that. I want him to have what he should have.”

“You’re sweet, Tony. You could just tell him you’re crazy about him.”

“I need him to understand I am the real thing, Pepper. I don’t want him to think I just want sex or to be seen with a hero.”

Tony woke up suddenly and sat straight up in bed. He ached with need from the dream. He started to touch himself then stopped. He wanted his first time with Steve to be real.

Tony enjoyed riding behind Steve on his bike, as they crossed out of Manhattan and into Brooklyn. Steve slowed in front of a trendy apartment building that had been remodeled into ‘hipster’ apartments.

“That’s where I lived. I couldn’t afford to live there now.”

Steve laughed it off, but Tony filed it away to task Pepper about how much back-pay Steve might be owed.

Steve showed him several addresses: his old school, the place he took art classes, Bucky’s family’s home – most of which were gone. Even the Dodgers Stadium at Ebbets Field was now condos and apartments.

They rode around for a while then stopped at a little street corner deli for lunch.

The whole day, all Tony could think about was how much he wanted to lay his head on that strong back and whisper silly love words into Steve’s ear as they rode. He thought about asking him to come home with him after such a perfect day, of making love to him.

When they got back to Avengers Towers, he kissed Steve good night and thanked him for a lovely day, then he went into his own apartment and thought about Steve long into the night.

“So how was it?” Natasha asked Steve the next afternoon while they were running.

“Fine,” was all he said.

“What does that mean?” she asked. “Did he hit on you? Not hit on you?”

Steve slowed down. Natasha followed suit.

“No, it was really fine. He was sweet. I just hope I didn’t screw up.”

“How?”

“I didn’t ask him in at my door.”

“Oh my god! He walked you to your door! How precious!” Natasha was laughing. “Both of you are so cute. You didn’t screw up. Call him. Ask him out this time.” She started to run again, paused and asked him, “Did he kiss you?”

Steve didn’t answer. His face gave the answer away.

“Is he a good kisser?” she asked.

Banner noticed Tony was unusually quiet.

“What’s going on, Tony?”

“Um, nothing. I sort of dated Rogers and -”

“Not sure if he wants to see me again.”

“Why not?”

“Well, you never know how a date went.”

“Hmm, two maybe.”

Summary: Dates can be confusing.

~~~
The strange thing about having a date is what to do next.
They had made out a bit on the sofa, kissing and holding one another close. Tony had even kissed him at his door when he’d walked him home. Steve had wondered about asking him in, but decided that might be pushy on his part.
Tony had been so cute and when he’d finally kissed Tony – wow! Steve wanted to pick him up and take him to his bed right then and there. He really hoped that he hadn’t screwed anything up by not asking Tony to come inside.
In another apartment, Tony was sure he’d screwed everything up. Steve had been pleased with the movie and Tony hadn’t actually seen it since he was a kid.
And the kisses! Tony hadn’t kissed nearly as many men as women, but after they’d gotten warmed up, Tony found that Steve was a wonderfully sweet kisser. The more they kissed, the hotter those sweet kisses got. He’d wanted to ask if he could come in, but Steve could be a little skittish sometimes so he didn’t.
Should he have?
He was going to ask Cap out again. That was for sure!
Summary: The date
~~~

Steve was nervous. Natasha kept saying it was a date, but how did a person date Tony Stark? Back in his day (oh god, seventy years ago!), a guy took his girl dancing. Wouldn’t the newspapers love it if he and Stark went dancing? Could Stark dance? Could he?

He changed shirts three times before Tony knocked on his door. He’d finally settled on jeans and a blue plaid shirt. He blushed at the look Tony gave him.

“Got any ideas?” Stark asked him.

“You asked, you choose.”

Stark already had, actually.

He beckoned Steve to follow. He led Steve to the very top of Stark Tower. There he had a table and chairs. Also there was a huge TV screen and a sofa. He pulled out a chair for Steve and then sat himself.

A waiter appeared with a soup, a fresh corn chowder. Then came salad, salmon with asparagus and ice cream for dessert. Steve ate with gusto, not saying much, just enjoying the delicious food.

After their dessert, they moved to the sofa. Popcorn and sodas were served and they settled down to watch The Wizard of Oz.

Steve was delighted. Tony had chosen a movie just for him. Steve slipped an arm over the back of the sofa and casually let it fall on Tony’s shoulders. He felt Stark stiffen for a second, then Tony scooted a little closer and settled against Steve.

“Tony, I want to ask you something.”

“You want me to work on your suit? I can make it better, stronger and lighter, maybe add some weaponry sort of like Natasha’s Widow Bites. Same color? New color?”

Tony was about to say something else when Steve leaned close and kissed his lips.

“That works, too,” was the only thing Tony said in response.

“Why do you think I want him?”

“Your eyes are glued to his ass, Tony. That’s a dead giveaway.”

“Think he knows?”

“There’s only one way to find out. Ask him out.”

“I’ll think on it.”

“Steve! Tony wants a date.” Natasha yelled.
