WHISPERED PROMISES

Frodo tried not to listen to its whispers. He knew that it was trying to corrupt him, to take his very soul. He couldn’t stop himself. It promised him everything he’d ever wanted and more. It whispered when he was awake and it whispered when he slept. It murmured whatever he needed to hear.

And it knew his intentions. It knew that his mission was throw it into the fire. He knew that he would never do such a thing to it, but he could never tell anyone that this was true.

It was his ring now, his own precious.

“Do you really think Babylon 5 is a beacon shining in the night?” Marcus asked Susan as they searched among the stars for more of the Old Ones. They were hoping they could find some help in the war with the Shadows.

“Yes, I do. We are the light in the darkness to many planets… why are you laughing?”

“Because you sound like an advertisement for Babylon 5. “Come see our shininess and we’ll cure what ails you…”

Susan couldn’t decide whether to laugh or get angry, then he started singing “This Little Light of Mine”.

Angry it was!

WITH FEELING

He was playing the violin, but not the discordant noise he usually played. I think he played that godawful racket to annoy me. But tonight he played a lullaby, one of the sweet songs I remembered from my childhood.

“What is the occasion? Tired of driving me mad?” I asked.

“I had word that my mother is dead. She sang it to me and Mycroft when we were small.”

Feeling awful for my sarcastic comment, I expressed my condolences. He looked at me, no emotion on his countenance, and said, “Perhaps I shall feel sorrow if I play long enough.”

UNTOUCHABLE

I found out quite by accident. I put my hand on his arm when we’d left his brother at the Diogenes Club. Mycroft had been his usual sarcastic self and Holmes left in a fit of pique. He’d jerked away as if my touch had burned him. I said nothing at all, just got in the hansom with him and rode in silence back to Baker Street.

Once at home, he’d lit up a cigarette and stared out the window for a long while, whether due to Mycroft’s words or my touch, I don’t know.

I won’t touch him again.

Indy knew that anything worth finding was normally hidden well. That’s why he’d learned so many forgotten languages and writings. He couldn’t stand to leave anything unknown.

He’d gotten the trait from his father. His father searched his whole life for the Holy Grail and they’d found it. He had seen it with his own two eyes, held it in his hands.

He’d brought many unbelievable things out of hiding and into the light. He prided himself on these things.

So how the hell did he have a son that he’d never had a clue about?

Damn Marion Ravenwood anyway!

MEANING OF LIFE STUFF

He could shoot, fight and do all manner of things military but he could not do two things: sing or dance. He had no sense of rhythm and he was tone deaf.

He knew that Samantha was going to ask him to dance with her at the wedding. He just knew it. How could he tell her no? They’d been through so much together for such a long time. Finally he was retired and they could get married and live happily ever after.

Or at least go fishing whenever they wanted to.

Maybe she’d agree to just live with him…

WITHOUT A PRAYER

He didn’t believe, but that didn’t matter. He knew they prayed for their world as his people had prayed for Gallifrey. He hoped things worked better but in the end, they would all go elsewhere. Their planet would die because they’d used it up – industry, war, greed - these things had taken their toll.

He liked these humans, more than any other of the races he’d met. They were violent and greedy and sometimes, simply stupid, but they had such potential, such a capacity to love and to believe that their lives mattered.

They didn’t have a prayer. Did they?

Ivanova wanted to strangle Marcus. He was a worse pest than she had been to her brother when she was a kid. He was everywhere, never quiet, talking all the time. Blah, blah, blah…

Why didn’t he leave her alone? What was his obsession with her? Not only did he talk in English but he spoke Minbari to her as well.

On and on endlessly!

She had to admit he was rather brave. He’d fought Neroon almost to the death in defense of Delenn, heedless of the threat to himself.

Maybe she’d been hasty. Strangling him might be too much.

Jackson laughed. “You haven’t filled out a report since our first mission. Try again.”

“You’ll go fishing with me.”

“I’d rather fill out reports!”

“As you wish.”

O’Neill got the sheet cake and proceeded to polish it off. He patted his stomach and grinned. “I’ll get those report for you.”

Daniel sighed, “Don’t bother. I’m going.”

OBLIVIOUS

Contempt is his default. Holmes, I mean. He is sure that there is no one anywhere who can even approach his intellect. And he holds it against everyone other than himself.

I’ve met his brother. I thought maybe he would provide a clue to Sherlock’s personality. Mycroft is even more of an ass than Sherlock is.

It’s not the intelligence part that annoys. It’s his disdain. He sniffs at love. He’s oblivious to needs of the flesh, both carnal and otherwise. His one weakness is even annoying because, if anything, that damnable cocaine makes his wit even sharper.

Damn him.
