Day 15

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so

Dear fanworld,

I want to thank you for all you've done for me... let me count the ways.
You gave a platform to write and to learn to write. I am not a master yet but I am better than when I started.
You gave me new worlds to live in. I have traveled the roads of Middle Earth, seen how big the TARDIS is inside, hung our with men of super powers, and solved mysteries with the best detective ever. None of those things were possible without fandom and imagination.
You gave me friends from all over the world. I have traveled to South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Germany to see and hang out with fandom friends. I've had guests from Iowa, Massachusetts, Germany, Wyoming, and Colorado visit me in my home. The world is open to me and it opened my eyes.
You taught me that no matter where, when or who we are, we all want the same things: Better lives, love, acceptance and friendship.
And most of all, you keep me dreaming of better worlds when this one is dismal and scary.

Love, Alex

Day 14

In your own space, create your own challenge. Whatever your challenge is, and have fun with it! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My challenge is to go out and find new fandoms to explore and new friends to make. Fandom isn't always about the thing; sometimes it's about the friends and the people. So my challenge to all of you and to myself is find a new fandom this year and really get into it and into the human interaction part of it.... having said that, avoid snark. Snark has no place in fun fandom, period.

Day 13:
In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Writing Goals (from Get Your Words Out):

1. I'd like to get more short works done: 500 - 2000 words.
2. I'd like to write more longer works as well, fanifc or original doesn't matter.
3. I'd like to begin an edit and rewrite of Nano from several years ago.
4. I'd like to do more exercises in writing as well.
5. Would like to spend more time brainstorming/researching.

Real Life Goals:

1. Read more, 35 - 50 books.
2. Lose weight.
3. Have some medical tests done that I don't want to do.
4. Make it through another year.

Day 12

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a podfic, an icon, a sketch, a meta, or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Cross stitch. Draft an essay about a particular medium. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of book you love, a ship manifesto, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Create something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This little story has a story of its own... if that makes sense.

Only a Dream

Day 11

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Star Wars: A New Hope (which was not called A New Hope until many years later). I am one of those old enough to have seen it in the theater in 1977. I was 17 years old. Years later, when I became very ill, Star Wars and the others in the trilogy became my constant companions as I watched them over and over while I was unable to get out. I also read the many novels in what was renamed 'Star Wars Legends' by Disney when it threw out a great body of work for the repetitive things they are now making. While I am glad that the franchise goes on, I am saddened that Disney has turned it into a 'Disney princess' thing.

Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've been writing and reading fanfiction for a long time. I have moved through many things... and am over most all of them. I like humor... in fanfiction and in published fiction. Life is sad and angsty as it is. I do not want to read things that make me cry as well. I like clever repartee and even crazy crack!fic. Make me smile, giggle or laugh out loud and I'll be a happy camper.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Til the End of the Line - Avengers MCU - Tony/Steve

Lingering Shadows - Babylon 5/Crusade - and end to the Drakh Plague

In the Garden of Midas - Alexander the Great historical fiction

Day 8

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My fandom canon is the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, particularly the Lord of the Rings and related works. After reading these, no other fantasy novels even to0uch them. They do seem to be the baseline that most/many fantasy writers use. Tolkien built a language then a world to go with it. It is, at it's heart, a simple quest story but it becomes more than that. It is a world as vast and complex as the real world, peopled with characters as varied as the real world ones as well. It's just way more interesting because it is a world we would LOVE to live in.

IN the entire body of work, the story of Cirdan the Shipwright and Gandalf and the third Ring of Power is my favorite moment:
Appendix B (The Tale of Years), fourth paragraph under the heading The Third Age:

Throughout the Third Age the guardianship of the Three Rings was known only to those who possessed them. But at the end it became known that they had been held at first by the three greatest of the Eldar: Gil-Galad, Galadriel and Círdan. The ring of Gil-Galad was given by him to Elrond; but Círdan surrendered his to Mithrandir. For Círdan saw further and deeper than any other in Middle-earth, and he welcomed Mithrandir at the Grey Havens, knowing whence he came and whither he would return.
"Take this ring, Master," he said, "for your labours will be heavy; but it will support you in the weariness that you have taken upon yourself. For this is the Ring of Fire, and with it you may rekindle hearts in a world that grows chill. But as for me, my heart is with the Sea, and I will dwell by the grey shores until the last ship sails. I will await you."

Day 7:

In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Surf the comments and find people to give love to.

What is it you love/like about me? Meme me the ways.
alexcat: (Default)
Day 6

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!" If you feel so inclined, leave a link to the fanwork you left feedback for so others can check it out.

I left a comment on this sweet little Babylon 5 story that I found at Ao3: Traditions by DownToTheSea.
alexcat: (Default)
Day 5

Recommend a fannish or creative resource. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

One of my favorite fannish resources is for the Babylon 5 fandom. It is a site called The Lurker's Guide to babylon 5. It's an old site with episode guides that are complete with commentary by the creator of B5 and notes on all matter of thing.
alexcat: (Default)
Day 4

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. And if you grant a wish, do the same thing!

I seldom read fanfic anymore nor do I look at fanart so i have no idea what my wish would be. In Tolkien, I'd love to see a story about The Moriquendi or some of the peoples who lived in the desert. Stories of the old efl lords are always good to read, especially Cirdan the shipwright.

I love good Star Wars and Babylon 5 fanart.
alexcat: (Default)
Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My recs are all gifts for me from various challenges and in no particular order.

1. Too Little To bite by Dargaer, Alexander 2004 fiction. A Yuletide fiction.

2. Sharing is Caring by Amatara, Boston Legal. Another Yuletide gift.

3. Forever - Give or Take by IgnobleBard, Tolkien. Slashy Santa
alexcat: (Default)
Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

In 2005, my 16 year old daughter died in an automobile accident. The people in Of Elves and Men (a Tolkien fandom group) called, sent flowers, letters, tiny gifts and tons of support and love, even from people I barely knew online. several of them made a book of works for me and sent it. I got poems and song recs that I still listen to this day. It didn't make the pain go away but it was an unexpected blessing.

In 2008, I was very ill and in the hospital for 6 weeks and again the cards, letters, and emails poured in from fandom friends for the whole time. Friends called and talked to my hubby and then me to see how I was doing. I felt their love and support from all over.

Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I ran across this challenge several years ago and it was fun... it made me more engaged in fandom than I had been for a while and it also allowed me to meet a few new people each year. Some have stuck around and some not but I always like to get new friends.

It also is a great way to start the new year with a bang! The enthusiasm carries over way past the 15 days of the challenge. I may not carry through with all the plans I made during Snowflake but I do some of them.

This challenge is one of the nicest things I've run across in fandom - something all inclusive and welcoming.
