ON WATSON’S ENGAGEMENT

“Why on earth do you feel the need to marry?”

I have to admit that Holmes sounded more sad than angry. I knew he wouldn’t understand, this man of reason that he was. He certainly never seemed to understand emotion, at least not on anyone’s part but the criminals he chased.

“I like her, Holmes. She is sweet and gentle. She soothes me.” And she did. All the things that Holmes did that upset me, Mary was the opposite of. She was busy and happy in her home, not needing constant excitement to make her content. She looked for the good in men and usually found it.

“What do I do then? Upset you? Anger you?” His eyes were not sad now but blazing with anger.

“You are a most infuriating man.” I stopped. He was infuriating. He made me feel alive, passionate, needed, wanted and he never had to say a word to evoke those feelings. “I shall marry Mary for some peace and quiet.”

What I didn’t, couldn’t say to him was that I would marry for peace but I would always return to him for a reason to live, to love. God in heaven, I loved him!
