Mischief in Maggody (Arly Hanks, #2)Mischief in Maggody by Joan Hess

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this one more than the first one! Maggody is so much like the place I live - they are still trying to get out of the Stone Age! Ariel is swimming in a sea of crazy people in her home town in rural Arkansas. She's the police chief in a town where nothing ever happens - yet she doesn't seem to lack in murders. In this one, hippies have opened a store and are expecting a baby and they also have a fortune teller and her brother come to town.

A long time resident goes missing and it's up to Arly to figure out what happened to her. Ruby Bee and her friend are up to their usual and the preacher and the mayor's wife are up to their usual as well.

It's a rollicking good time!

Marvel's Captain America - First VengeanceMarvel's Captain America - First Vengeance by Fred Van Lente

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a compilation of the prequel comics to the CA: First Avenger Movie and it elaborates the tale of Steve Rogers a little more. We learn more about him as a kid, more about Erskine and it ends with the movieverse beginning. I enjoyed it. The illustrations were gorgeous as well. I love the really nice artwork in modern comics!

The OutsidersThe Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I reread The Outsiders after watching the Great American Read. I had read it as a teen and reread it some years later as well. I know many people said they identified with Ponyboy and the others, but nothing in my teens was remotely like their lives. I grew up in a rural area and never knew any 'greasers'. if we had them, I never knew anything about it. I also have not ever really identified with any of the other great 'coming of age' books either, books like Catcher in the Rye or A Separate Peace.

Having said all that, the narrative is compelling and does leave on a hopeful note about life and family.

Booked 4 Murder (Sophie Kimball Mystery, #1)Booked 4 Murder by J.C. Eaton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This one was funny and cute. It's not really a murder mystery as much as just a mystery. Phee is likable and so is her mother. It takes place in her mother's senior living community in Arizona. After several members of her book club die whiel reading a 'cursed' book, she calls Phee in to solve the crime even though Phee is a just an accounts clerk for a police force in Minnesota. Much cuteness and funniness ensue!

Dead Wrong (Blackmoore Sisters Mystery, #1)Dead Wrong by Leighann Dobbs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I rather enjoyed this one. It is our April Cozy at our reading group. I like the Blackmoore Sisters and hope we see much more of them and perhaps a little longer tale next time. The characters were pleasant, the murder was someone we didn't like and it left us with a little mystery at th3e ending. Plus there was a budding romance.

The book was very short but that really might be my only complaint.

There was a rather interesting cat as well.

I will be reading more of this series for sure.

A Wizard of Earthsea (Earthsea Cycle, #1)A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was fantastic!

If i have read Le Guin before, I do not remember it.

This was the FIRST fantasy novel of its kind written expressly for teens though I see it as more universal than that. It is the story of Ged, a young sorcerer who learns how little he knows when he attempts things beyond his skill or knowledge and creates a shadow that he must deal with before he can do anything.

several people at the book group that I am in found it old fashioned but I found it wonderful without all the flowery and useless language of modern fantasy.

Loved it and will read more Le Guin.

Survival of the Fritters (Deputy Donut Mystery #1)Survival of the Fritters by Ginger Bolton

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was March's Cozy Mystery and it was okay. I liked it though it was not terribly remarkable. Emily runs a donut shop with her father-in-law and solves a murder while trying not to fall for her dead husband;s partner on the police force. It has donuts, cats and old ladies so not a bad read.

Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind (Miss Julia, #1)Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind by Ann B. Ross

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was a complete delight! Miss Julia is a throwback to another time - my mother's generation, who finds herself confronting a very modern world. Her husband dies and nothing is the same as she learns many things and secrets that she'd never have believed. I loved every single page and every "thay Lord!" in this book. It takes place in North Carolina and the writer is a North Carolinian so the voice and the point of view are spot on. It has a bit of mystery, too.

I already ordered a copy of the next one in the series.

Who is really named Dean James.

Murder Past Due (Cat in the Stacks, #1)Murder Past Due by Miranda James

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I had read this before and really liked it but this time, I found Charlie tediously boring and I got VERY tired of Diesel being mentioned in every paragraph.

The mystery was pretty good, though. He did stretch that out to the very end and it certainly wasn't who Charlie and I thought it was. I do remember the stories getting better as we meet more characters in Athena, Mississippi. Azalea was adorable - I want some of her roast!

I will actually read more of these, despite falling out of love with this first one.

Feliz Navidead (Santa Fe Cafe Mystery #3)Feliz Navidead by Ann Myers

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rita is at it again and this time, Celia could be in danger. One of the actors in the Christmas pageant is murdered and Rita vows to make sure that Celia is safe. This one has Indian artifacts, Rita's mom and lots of tasty food to make you wish you could be in Santa Fe at Christmas, too.

The mystery is fun and the food sounds great and the added bonus is Flori and her wacky pals as they lend a hand...

a really fun read.

Sleeping Giants (Themis Files, #1)Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book grabbed me from the first sentence and kept me turning pages for days. We were visiting Germany and I read it at every chance I got until I finished. The style is quite unique and the story is very compelling. I couldn't stop but even then, it leaves you wondering.

It is the story of a very strange scientific discovery that confounds those who found it and even at the end, we are not really sure what has happened. There is another book in the series...

Look What the Wind Blew In (Dig Site Mysteries, #1)Look What the Wind Blew In by Ann Charles

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The first in a series that's a spinoff of the Deadwood Series. I really liked Violet's brother, Quint. This book is set in the jungles of Mexcio and combines ancient curses and modern archeology and romance as Quint goes to a dig in Mexico to find out what happened to his old professor and falls head over heels for the archeologist is digging at the site now, Angelica Garcia. Danger mystery and a few giggles ensue as we meet some unforgettable characters in the steamy jungle.
