EVENSTAR
The boy had seen the strange man in the forest more than once but he was afraid to tell his mother, afraid she wouldn’t believe him. Or worse, afraid she would. The man was dressed like men of old, in a cloak. His long blond hair was pulled back in a braid. He looked like a part of the forest.
The boy saw him again today and the man nodded and walked into the mist deep in the woods. The boy followed. The man walked a long time but the boy managed to keep up. He was sure the man knew he was being followed.
They came to a clearing and in the center was a small mound with a gravestone at one end. The man stood there without moving for a very long time then he laid something down near the stone.
“Goodbye, Undomiel. I am going home. I am the last one here. I grow weary at last. You have passed into memory but we will never forget you.”
When he had gone, the boy picked up the tiny pendent he left behind and saw the lights shining inside it. It was the light of the evening star.
