WHEN WATSON’S AWAY
Holmes was gone when I got there. Mrs. Hudson said he had gone out on a case with Lestrade. That meant it was a police matter. It also meant I needed to find out where he was; he sometimes clashed with the higher-ups at Scotland Yard.
I headed to the police station and found him sitting in the jail. There he sat in his hat and coat beside a couple of the filthiest, smelliest men I’d ever seen, looking as if they were chums.
He nodded and rose to his feet when he saw me. “What took you so long?”
