THE OLD MAN AND THE CAT

I paced back and forth, back and forth at 221B Baker Street. I had no idea where Holmes was. He’d been gone for three days without a word to me or Mrs. Hudson. People kept stopping by, wanting Holmes for one job or another. I told them to come back in a day or so, that he was on holiday.

One old man wanted Holmes to find his missing cat. He was a tall, gaunt man a bulbous nose and a very shabby coat. I took his address and told him that Holmes would contact him when he returned. He was adamant that Holmes do so.

I went looking for the cat myself since the old fellow seemed so anxious. I found her in a box at the train station with a litter of kittens. She’d wandered there and the stationmaster had put her in a box. The old man was so grateful that he offered me a kitten when they were old enough to wean.

I did a few other simple jobs but still no Holmes. I finally up waiting and went home to Mary. When I told her about finding the kittens, she smiled and said of course she’d take one.

The next day, Holmes returned without a word. I didn’t bother to query him. He’d tell me what he wanted me to know. He sat in his usual chair and rubbed his hands together. Finally he looked at me and smiled. “So, does Mary want a kitten?”
