It Begins

Celeborn had ridden all night to reach home from the north. He had gone to give orders to the Marchwarden. He told them to expect eight visitors in the next few days and to escort them to Caras Galadhon when they arrived.

“Did you give them my message?” Galadriel asked as he dismounted.

“Yes. They reported an increase in Orc activity near the border.”

“I feared as much.”

“You mentioned only eight? Who is missing?” He had not asked her before his journey though the question had worried him.

“Gandalf has fallen.”

“In Moria?” Celeborn hated that Dwarvish hell and always had. No good could come from there.

“In Moria. To a Balrog, I fear.”

“It has begun then?” He turned from brushing his horse to look her in the eyes,

“Valar help us all then.” He put his arms around his wife and held tight. “Valar help us all.”
