A PACK OF DOGS

Alexander watched his men as they argued among themselves over something trivial. He said nothing but shook his head. He had a sudden vision of them fighting like this over his dead body. The fight wasn’t over anything trivial this time. They argued over the division of his empire, most of the known world.

He dismissed the thought as ridiculous.

He heard one of them, Cassander perhaps. “I tell you, my judgment is better than his and I say Greece should rule it all from Athens.”

He knew. They would fight like a pack of dogs over his carcass someday.

THE SAME MASTER

“Do you always have to be lurking about?” Hephaestion asked the eunuch, his face a mask of anger, bordering on rage.

Bagoas tried to look down humbly but failed, so he looked straight at Hephaestion. “He is my master. My job is to care for him.”

“He is my master too, slave.”

Bagoas nodded.

“Perhaps we could both care for him better if we were not always at odds.”

Again, the slender Persian nodded.

Alexander came rushing into the tent and Bagoas hurried to meet his needs, slyly smiling at Hephaestion. The moment was lost. Life reverted back to normal.

FATHER KNOWS BEST

Erestor sighed.

How was he ever going to manage this? He was in love with Elrond’s son and had been since the boy had become an adult, maybe even before.

But how was he going to tell Elrond? What would his oldest friend think?

“What troubles you, Erestor?” Elrond could slip into a room quieter than anyone in Imladris.

“I am not ready to talk about it yet, my lord.”

“If you are worried that I will be angry about your love for my son, rest easy. I have known for some time. He is a fine son and will be a loyal lover. So will you.”

Erestor raised his head and looked at Elrond. The real problem was that he had not yet told Elladan how he felt. .

“He will be pleased, you know. Have you never noticed how he looks at you?”

Elrond, it seemed, knew all.

REPAIRING SIMON

Kaylee loved Serenity as much as if the ship were a person. She petted and fretted over her every moment of every day.

Almost.

She was beginning to feel the same way about Simon. She and Simon, they were really in the same business. Only he worked on people instead of ships. He had been particularly stubborn in even acknowledging that she cared for him. Sometimes he acted as if she didn’t even exist.

She looked down at the fifteen-inch long wrench in her hand and grinned. Maybe he just needed some repair work to make him run right too.
