Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: Does anyone have any plans for making Christmas gifts or cards?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

GYWO is BACK for 2026! We're starting our eighteenth year-long writing challenge with thirteen pledges to help you challenge yourself, achieve your writing goals, and build a writing life.

Keep in mind that even our smallest goals require a serious commitment throughout the year. While it’s okay for writers to be behind or even entirely miss their pledge goal, we want you to pick a pledge that will keep motivating you all year long. Before choosing your pledge, please take note of the few requirements we have of our members, and carefully consider which of the thirteen pledges you'd like to choose. You may choose only one pledge.

Membership Requirements & Information )

Pledge Types )

Pledging

If you pledged in a previous year and didn't meet your goal, quit, or were removed from the comm for missing check-ins, you are welcome to pledge again.

When choosing your pledge, consider your personal writing habits and what you find most motivating. Will hitting your word count goal early help propel you to keep writing through the remainder of the year? Do you need a major challenge to keep you on pace? Have you surpassed smaller goals in previous years and need more of a challenge? Are you already writing multiple days a week? Make sure the pledge you make is one that will motivate you. (If you need help deciding, please check out our post Choosing Your 2026 Pledge.)

To make your pledge, there are two steps to complete: Pledge & Request.

Step 1: Pledge
Complete the GYWO 2026 Pledge Form. You must provide (1) your email address, (2) your Dreamwidth or OpenID username, and (3) your 2026 pledge level.

Your email will be added to a GYWO newsletter mailing list. This monthly newsletter includes a link to the monthly check-in and brief community news. Your email is also the primary contact for moderator questions and reminders throughout the year. Your email address will never be shared without your explicit permission.

Your Dreamwidth or OpenID will allow you access to this community where you will find discussions and support, writing challenges and games, and more. Members are not required to participate in the community (but we hope you will). This username is your official GYWO username and will be used at each check-in to identify who you are in our database. As such, if you are using OpenID, please make sure it is connected to Dreamwidth before pledging.

Your Pledge Level is your goal for the year. Even if you exceed your pledge, you’ll identify your official pledge level at each check-in.

If you participated in GYWO previously under a different username than the one you plan to use this year, please take your best guess at your previous username—we track repeat members so we can see how the community has grown year to year.

Optionally, we request your Discord, Bluesky, and Tumblr usernames and your birth month for a monthly celebration post.
  • Any GYWO writer may join the GYWO Discord at any point during the active year—just follow the instructions once you join the server to receive full access.
  • For Bluesky, we only follow back GYWO writers who have provided their accounts for the current year.
  • On Tumblr we interact with accounts who ping or message us, but it's helpful to know if you're a current GYWO writer.
  • For birthday celebrations, we only include GYWO writers who have provided their birth month for the current year.

Reminders: Sign up for only ONE pledge.
Sign up with only ONE account.
You may sign up using Dreamwidth or OpenID.
You may use a fic/writing journal instead of your personal one.
If you have previously participated under a different username, please let us know so we can track our repeat members.

Step 2: Request
Once you have completed the GYWO 2026 Pledge Form, please request to join the Dreamwidth community if you are not already a member. We will approve memberships on January 1st (as we still have 2025 members scrambling to hit their goals!), and we'll hold you in the queue until then. You're also invited to use the link provided on the confirmation page to join our Discord server. Access roles are assigned starting on December 31, but it's a good idea to get yourself acclimated to our server rules before then.
If you are a current GYWO member or already have access to the GYWO Discord server, you won’t need to request membership. But it may be a good idea to confirm you can view Dreamwidth member-locked posts and see the full channel list on Discord.
If you are not planning to use Dreamwidth, let us know in the pledge form. You still need to sign up with a DW or OpenID account, but we won't hound you about joining the community. (But really, we strongly recommend it.)
If you are not planning to use Discord… you don't need to do anything, actually. But it is where we host writing sprints.

If you’re concerned we didn’t receive your pledge:
The GYWO 2026 Pledge Form will automatically send you email confirmation of your pledge. Additionally, we will be updating the GYWO 2026 Writers page on the website as new members are processed. If you don’t receive an email and your name isn’t added to the 2026 Writers list, email gywomod@gmail.com. Please give us at least twenty-four hours before inquiring about your status. (Over the Christmas holiday we will not be processing pledges, so please check back on Dec 27th.)

IMPORTANT: Anyone requesting to join the community who has not made a pledge will not be added. To ensure you are not left out, make your pledge first, then request to join.

You have through January 15, 2026 to make your pledge.
After that time you will NOT be able to change your pledge
or join the challenge, so think carefully before committing.

Got all that? Then it’s time to complete
the GYWO 2026 Pledge Form

If you still have questions, ask them here! But hopefully this post covers everything you need to know about what is required of members, what the pledge options are, and how to make your pledge. We hope to see your pledge soon!

I hope everyone is doing well. I am going through a mental health breakdown. The last few years battling cancer took its toll. But, I am almost 2 years into remission and I have some wonderful caregivers helping me through this rough patch. So grateful for this community because it gives me a chance to look at everyone's lists to see if there are any wishes that I can grant (which is pretty uplifting right now.) Here's mine:

Gifts for everyone:

Battling Cancer has taught me two things that I really want to pass on.

1. Your time is more valuable than money
. Not everyone will be worth your time. For those that are, please tell them how much you care about them and how much they mean to you. Tell them often. Go on that outing, take that picture, call that friend. Anything can and does happen. You never want to regret time lost and you never want them to suffer with your loss.

2. Work on your baggage. Unpack that stuff. A lot of it was hand-me-downs anyway. You down need to carry all that stuff that just weighs you down and makes life harder. Find a therapist, a shadow work book, a faith leader - someone to help you dissect your mental junk drawer and put things in a perspective that heals you. Don’t wait…deal with your baggage so that you can live better now instead of later.

My wishes:

3. Movie, series, or documentary recommendations - I'm way behind the curve, so if you have seen something good that you recommend, let me know. I have full access to a library and I am not afraid to use it. Any genre - I also have access to Netflix, Disney, Hulu, HBO/Max, and many free services like YouTube.

4. Enamel pins - I collect and wear enamel pins - they can be any kind/theme.

5. Whimsical care package - My aesthetic is a combination of goblin/gremlincore, dark fairy/cottagecore, and witchcore. I don’t have any major food allergies or sensitivities. I love nature and nature colors. I believe in fairies, elementals, and forest spirits. But overall, I am a big child so I’m pretty easy to please. I am autistic, so no clothing, lotions, cosmetics, or overpowering smells.

6. Tarot/oracle decks - I collect and read these for myself. I will absolutely take a used, well kept deck.

7. Resources - I am deconstructing from internalized racism, patriarchy, ableism, etc. - I welcome books, sites, Ted talks, or any other resources you may have that would help me on my journey. I am here to listen, learn, and appreciate.

8. Recommendations for books by or about marginalized voices: POC, Native, LGBTQIA, Disabled, etc. Genre doesn't matter, I read everything. This is a princely gift!

9. Music recommendations - Hit me with your latest earworm, favorite band or artist, or song that hits you in the feels. Bonus for a themed playlist (I am on Spotify).

10. Cat food - My boy’s favorite flavors are Fancy Feast Pate tender chicken and liver,; Fancy Feast cod, sol, and shrimp feast; and the delectables chicken and vegetable push up. My boys are Bodhi (16), Wilbur (14), Henry (10), and Jasper (6) and they are all such great cats.

NOTE: I am absolutely ok with hand-me-downs, thrifted, and used items.

Cauliflower Reuben Salad
Servings: 4 to 6 Active time: 20 mins Total time: 40 mins

INGREDIENTS

*For the salad
Fine salt
1 1/4 cups (9 ounces) French green lentils
1 garlic clove
1 medium head cauliflower (2 pounds), cut into florets (see Substitutions)
2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons caraway seeds
Freshly ground black pepper
1 cup (6 ounces) drained sauerkraut (a small amount of brine is okay; see Substitutions)
2 handfuls baby spinach or arugula
Thinly sliced scallions, for serving
4 small dill pickles, for serving (optional)
Rye bread, for serving (optional)

*For the dressing
1/2 cup vegan mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 scallions, thinly sliced
1 small dill pickle, finely chopped
1 small garlic clove, minced or finely grated
1/2 teaspoon sweet paprika
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
Freshly ground black pepper

STEPS
1. Cook the lentils and roast the cauliflower: Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees.
2. Bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the lentils and garlic, reduce the heat so the water is at a simmer, and cook until just tender, 18 to 20 minutes. Drain (you can either discard the garlic or stir it a little, so it melts into the lentils).
3. Meanwhile, on a large sheet pan, toss the cauliflower with the oil and caraway seeds. Season lightly with salt and pepper, and toss again until combined. Roast for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the florets are golden and just tender.
4. Make the dressing: In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, lemon juice, scallions, pickle, garlic, paprika, salt and a big pinch of pepper until combined.
5. Assemble the salad: In a large bowl, toss together the lentils, cauliflower, sauerkraut and dressing until combined. Add the spinach or arugula, and gently toss again to coat.
6. Divide among bowls, top with scallions and serve, with a pickle and rye bread on the side, if desired.

*Make ahead: The cauliflower, lentils and dressing can be made and refrigerated separately for up to 1 day in advance.
*Storage: If you do not plan to eat the entire salad, refrigerate leftover cauliflower, lentils and dressing in separate containers for up to 4 days.

chanter1944: a house and road blanketed in snow (Wisconsin winter: buried in snay)
[personal profile] chanter1944 posting in [community profile] holiday_wishes
I made it! Yay! Chanter here, ducking in the door in a shower of newly-fallen snow. Whee!

For a little info about yours truly, I'm a queer, neurodiverse nerdlady living in the U.S. northern Midwest, and this is my... fifth? something like that time participating in this comm. Anyway, here's a handful of wishes. None of them need to cost anything monetarily, though a little time might be involved, especially in 4.

1: If anyone is inclined to have a sniff at my AO3, it's [archiveofourown.org profile] Chanter and kudos and comments are love. :)

2: I seem to link to these every year, but I'm in the habit of playing Freekibble trivia daily. NO sign-up whatsoever necessary, just playing trivia and clicking a button or two for good causes.

3, which dovetails neatly with 2: A DW pal linked me to Arab.org and its handful of click-to-give contribution options, and now I'm in that habit too. Again, no sign-up necessary, just clicking buttons for worthy causes.

4: At one point, someone made me an icon of Back To The Future's Emmett and Clara (I ship them ever so much, ahem) but before I could snag it, the connected comment went... kerboom, never to return. No idea what happened there, but yes, I'd love an Emmett/Clara icon, if anyone's willing. And just so it's out there, I'd really prefer if it weren't furious!Clara and dismayed!Emmett from one particular scene; if you know, you know.

5: Utter frivolousness at this end. If anyone knows of a Stateside source of orange marmalade made to EU standards i.e. properly bitter citrus and not full of a ton of sugar like most of what we get over here, please do clue me in? I wasn't able to bring any home from Ireland when I was over there visiting in 2024, more's the pity. I know this might be iffy to get hold of, considering Stateside tariffs etc, but I figure it's worth a try.

6: This might sound silly, and I absolutely do not mean it to be creepy, but those with pets who appreciate petting, scritches, snuggles etc, please pass some love along? I have no friendly furry creature at the moment (I need to find a local shelter and start volunteering to pet cats again, and I miss my lovebug of a Labrador dearly) so critter happiness by proxy is the best I've got.

7: This is niche, but I would love to find other fans of oldtime radio shows! I know I'm far from the only one out there. If so inclined, come squee at me about your favorite Shadow, or your preferred Johnny Dollar, or how Candy Matson absolutely did not give up her career after - *coughs!* ahem! series's end spoilers! or how fantastic the adventures of Betty Lewis, freelance insurance investigator would be, or just what happened to Janice Corey after a specific Suspense two-parter ended, or... Anyway, fellow folks fond of the golden age of radio, please feel free to drop me a line.
