Tony denied it. He pretended that he’d never been in space, never nearly died, never held Peter Parker in his arms until he turned to dust.

He ignored the others.

He married Pepper. Morgan was born; he loved her with all his heart.

He denied it all because he knew that he was the one. He would lay down on that wire and let the others cross over him this time. He would take one for the team, for the world. He would become the kind of hero that Cap had always been.

He just wanted a little more time.

She walked up behind him and when he stopped punching, she touched his shoulder.

He was smiling when he turned.

“You’re the only one who knows,” he told her.

“The ones who pay attention know,” she answered and took his hand. “There are more of us than you think.” She kissed his palm and placed it against her face.

“Right now, you’re the only one I need.”

Steve was staring out at the lake after Tony’s memorial service.

The last person he ever expected to come talk to him did.

“He believed he could save the world.” Pepper touched Steve’s arm. “I never believed him, you know. I thought it was ego. It wasn’t,” she continued. “It was all he ever wanted and all I never wanted for him. The night he found out how to time travel, I finally told him he’d never rest unless he saved the world.”

“And he did,” he whispered.

Tears ran freely down Steve’s face as he reached for her hand.

Carol Danvers found that she missed the new friends she’d made on Earth. She’d mourned Stark and Romanoff with the others, then shed taken off into space. She had work to do to protect these people from things like Thanos.

She and Talos had an idea and they needed Fury’s help. They wanted to build a platform in space to guard against incursions like the one she just dealt with. They needed Fury to help them run it.

This time she had a cell phone to call Fury instead of the old pager.

“Fury, it’s me. I’ve got an idea.”

She’d heard so many stories about her father that Morgan Stark couldn’t remember which ones were her memories and which ones were those of all the other people who had known Tony Stark.

Her dad would be proud of the Avengers, of them all. There were different faces now. Sam Wilson was Captain America, Kate Bishop was Hawkeye. There were others, new faces with new names. Avengers every one.

She looked out the window of the Tony Stark Avengers Headquarters, then turned to Rhodey. “You think the world is ready?”

He smiled. “For Iron Woman? I don’t see why not!”
