Saturday's Person - Princess Leia Organa

I was blown away when I was 17 and saw Star Wars - one reason was Luke and Han but the other one was Princess Leia. She didn't really need to be rescued. As a matter of fact, the men were quite silly and inept. She took over and got things done. She was a fast talker, a smart woman and could do everything from diplomacy to ship mechanics.
In what Disney now calls Legends, she became the head of the New Republic and tried to make it work while being a wife, mother and diplomat. She also had Jedi training though she never became a full fledged Jedi.
My only question was: Why didn't she fly a fighter, too?
