#7 Peeve as in pet peeve
Mar. 7th, 2011 04:40 pmPeeve
tr.v. peeved, peev•ing, peeves
To cause to be annoyed or resentful. See Synonyms at annoy.
n.
1. A vexation; a grievance.
2. A resentful mood: in a peeve about the delays.
My pet peeves are the words that everyone gets wrong for no good reason:
1. To – I’m going to the store.
Too – I’m going too.
Two – The two of us will go.
(How hard is THAT?)
2. There – I’m going over there.
Their – I’m going to their house.
They’re – They’re not at home.
(Again, how hard is that one?)
3. Lose – I will lose my key if I’m not careful.
Loose – My pants are so loose that I might lose them too.
(Easy peasy!)
4. Then – I will do this then I will do that.
Than – I’d rather do this than that.
(Not even close in meaning OR on the keyboard)
5. No – No, you cannot have that.
Know – I know you want it but I said no.
(Doh!!)
6. Were – We were young once.
Where – Where are you from?
(How they get mixed up, I cannot tell at all.)
7. Set – Set the flower pot on the table.
Sit – Sit on the sofa with me.
(You do the first to something else and the second one is something you do yourself.)
8. Lie – Lie down and rest.
Lay – Lay the books on the desk.
(The tenses are bit more complicated but here goes:
Lie – lie, lay, lain, lying
Lay – lay laid, laid, laying)
Meanings on this one can vary and usage is arguable then.
9. Who’s – Who’s there?
Whose – Whose book is this?
10. You’re – You’re never going to understand.
Your stupidity is astounding.
(My all time pet peeve!!!)
11. Past – The past is better left alone.
Passed – He passed me the beans.
Now for some common misspellings:
Definate is definitely wrong!
Mispell is often misspelled.
Beleive is unbelievably wrong! (‘i’ before ‘e’ except after ‘c’)
My conscience is clear about that.
He was conscious before the brick hit him in the head.
Lightning strikes. Lightening does not.
Until has one l. Till has two.
