HEAL THEYSELF
I had not seen Holmes for several months as my marriage and my medical practice kept me quite busy. I received the note upon returning home late one evening from sitting with a patient until the danger of mortality had passed. The note was delivered by one of the boys Holmes often used as his eyes and ears in the street, the Baker Street Irregulars. The note said, “Come quickly.” I told Mary that Holmes needed me and hurried to Baker Street.
Mrs. Hudson met me at the door. “He’s been pacing all day. He won’t open the door for me.”
I hurried up the stairs and banged on the door to the sitting room that we once shared. “Let me in, Holmes!”
He finally opened the door. He looked like death itself. He was pale and shivering almost too hard to speak. “What have you done?”
“I have seen a ghost!”
“What nonsense!” I pushed my way into the room and moved him toward the sofa. “Lie down and let me see what’s the matter.”
He was burning up with fever. I called to Mrs. Hudson to bring a pan of cool water and some cloths. We bathed him with the wetted cloths until he cooled down then we covered him in blankets. He woke around dawn and asked for water. The fever seemed to have broken finally.
“What happened to you? How long have been sick?”
He looked at me as if I were a complete fool. “I was studying whether giving oneself the influenza would make one immune to it.”
“You gave this to yourself?”
“Oh yes. A scientist must do his research,” he murmured before he fell asleep again.
I sighed and sat back to rest my eyes. Holmes would be the death of me yet.
