Just wanted to repost the art contest reminder. A little less than a month until works should be in. You CAN turn them in before if they're done. They should be at least 300 dpi and should be usable as the front page for OEAM and for pieces at Cafe Press.

Here are the rules:

Calling all Artists

We are announcing an art contest to find a new piece of art to adorn the homepage at Of Elves and Men. We also would like to use it on some gift items at our Café Press shop. The contest is open to anyone who would like to submit a piece of work.

Here are the rules:

1. Artwork should be original, not a depiction of anything from the LOTR movies. We do not wish to get into any trouble with New Line Cinema. Depictions from the books are what we are after.
2. We are looking for a Tolkienesque landscape, more or less, though people can be included in the piece.
3. Artwork cannot be photo manipulations. Again we do not want to run into any copyright issues.
4. The winning piece will be exclusive to OEAM, though the artist will receive credit everywhere it’s used.
5. Works should be high enough resolution that they can be used to make items at Café Press.

The prize for the piece chosen for the website is a $100.00 gift certificate at Amazon. I am also hoping to have banners made for all participants. Other prizes may be added later.

The dates for the contest are Aug. 2- Nov. 3. 2007. Work may be submitted during that time period and the winner will be announced over the US Thanksgiving holidays.

New Lindon
Friday, OCT. 5, 1100 hours:

Gil-galad looked skeptical. “Are you are that is what she wants?”

Oropher nodded. “I am very sure. She has pictures of them all over her apartment. If you came to visit more often, you’d know that.”

Gil-galad blushed. It was true; he didn’t get over to visit as often as he should.

“All right, then. How do we get her one?”

“We have to go to New Antarctica,” Oropher said with a smile.

“I don’t like cold… at all. And someone stole my purple socks so my feet will freeze!”

New Antarctica
Friday, OCT 5, 1900 hours:

“Skipper! Skipper! I spotted a boat!” Private was fairly dancing in excitement. New Antarctica was awfully quiet most of the time. He had no notes to take, poor Kowalski had nothing to blow up and Rico… well, he wasn’t really sure what Rico did anyway. Skipper still told them what to do… always.

“Hmmm. Kowalski!” The commander of the penguins yelled.

“Something need blowing up, sir?”

“Not yet. Private has spotted a boat.”

Rico just ran around yelling in what was perhaps Japanese.

The four watched until the boat threw out anchor and two people climbed into a small boat and began to row ashore.

“I recognize them, sir!” Kowalski was fairly jumping up and down now. “We did a mission at their house once.” He looked down at Skipper’s feet clad in bright purple socks.

“Great Hoover Damn! Man your battle stations, penguins!” Skipper would have turned white with fright if he’d not already been black and white.

New Antarctica
Friday, OCT 5, 2300 hours:

“You *said* Antarctica! This is the tropics!” Gil-galad pulled off his heavy overcoat and his wooly cap.

“It is! See the sign!” There in red crayon was a sign that said ‘New Antarctica.’

“And they live here?”

Oropher nodded without a word and pointed. There they stood, all four of them, one in purple socks. They smiled and waved at the two elves.

Gil-galas started to chase them but Oropher caught his arm. He pulled a bag from his coat pocket, a bag filled with herring. He opened the sealed bag and waved it in front of them. The little one with the notepad was quivering with delight at the sight.

“Resist, Private!” Skipper urged but it was too late. The chubby little fellow was running to the elves.

Oropher laughed and flipped a small piece of the fish to the penguin. He caught it in his mouth and swallowed it whole.

“There’s enough for all of you…” Oropher called out.

Rico sidled over to them for a bite, followed by Kowalski. Skipped held out… for a while then he too ran to the elves and their treat of herring from the North Sea.

Oropher lifted the bag out of his reach. “Not so fast! You have something we need. We haven’t given Jenny her birthday present and we want those socks for her. We got them for Christmas and you stole them. Now we have come for them.”

The chief of the penguin brigade stood undecided for a moment then he removed the socks and handed them to Gil-galad, who wrinkled his nose at the smell.

Oropher handed him the rest of the bag of fish and the elves went back to their large ship and left.

Germany
Saturday, OCT 6, 0900 hours:

Jenny opens the package and smiles, despite the smell of fish and penguin feet. She lifts the socks out and sees the card.

“Happy Birthday to our favorite person,
Love,
Oropher, GG and Alex
(Skipper, Private, Kowalski and Rico too)”

THE END
