PROMISE KEPT

Alan Shore could never be called a generous man, or a nice man. He was usually immoral too but that made little difference. He got the job done. His wins were almost as legendary at Denny Crane’s. As were his conquests.

But today he was none of those things. He was drowning in grief. His best friend in the whole world was being buried today.

But Alan wouldn’t be going to the funeral.

He was in jail. When things got so bad that Denny didn’t know him any more, Alan had fulfilled his promise. He had done as Denny asked.

Shirley sat by his side. “Denny sent me to defend you.”

Alan raised an eyebrow.

“Before the – mad cow got too bad, he retained me to be your lawyer. He knew you’d need the best, well, the second best.”

Alan patted her hand. “I think now you’re the best, Shirley.”
