Snowflake Challenge - Day 10

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, creator, episode, or it could be your fandom friends. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to.

Dear Captain America,

I had no idea when I saw you in the theater in 2011 that you would change my life and maybe save it. But when Dr. Erskine opened that box, everything changed.

You see, I was having a bad run. My only child died in a car accident in 2005. In 2008, my mother became ill and then I did, spending 6 weeks in the hospital after almost dying from an ischemic colon and kidney shutdown. I was spent months after with a walker and a wound 12 inches long and 3 inches deep that had to be dressed twice a day, along with a blood clot in my left leg. My mother died in 2009 and my hubby's best friend died in 2010...

You were the most beautiful thing I have ever laid eyes on, even better, you were such a sweetheart. I started poking around and watched Iron Man. Tony Stark knocked my off my feet, too. He was everything you weren't - the two of you were the perfect pair. I watched all the Marvel movies and was hooked on the fandom. I wrote a little Cap/Iron Man lve here and there.

Then in 2016, tRump was elected and i damn near lost the will to go on. I got so depressed that I despaired of everything. And I started writing and writing and writing. I wrote love stories of every sort about you. I wrote fix-its, could have beens and anything else I could think of. I've met one or two new folks becasue of you and Marvel.

Thanks for everything. You saved my life. I will continue giving you all the happily ever afters I can for as long as I can.

Love,
Alex

::HUGS YOU FIERCELY::

That's what fandom does. It takes us away from real life and yet helps us have the strength to live that life. So glad it has helped you so much! And that it pushed you to write and share with others is excellent.

Thank you so much for sharing! Hope to see you again on Snowflake!

I love this letter - it is a perfect example of how lifesaving fandom is.

*Hugs* You're a true survivor, and I'm so glad that despite everything that's happened, you survived to find fandom and it's had such a positive effect. It really is amazing what the love of a show/movie, etc, especially when you find those other people who share the love and you can flail and squee over it with.

I am thinking of the USA today, sincerely hoping that the inauguration goes ahead without any violence, and that better times are ahead for your country.

Thank you for sharing and taking part in the challenge.

I'm so glad you had an anchor to cling to. I would have missed your posts and interchanges.

Fandom is great for helping us deal with RL. I'm glad you found Captain America and then Iron Man at a time when you needed them most.

*hugs*

Fandom can be so much of a life saver from reality and inner demons and such an outlet for everything else that refuses to be let go in any other way.

I'm almost tempted to go on a ramble about how my view of Steve is almost exactly the opposite of yours; but you know what, I'm not going to. I'm glad for what he means to you. I'm glad for he represents to you even if I don't agree. I'm glad you find so much meaning in the time you spend writing and thinking about the character.

We all deserve to have someone that means that much to us, even if they're fictional. And it sounds like you found him at just the right time.
