Summary: Shepherd Book asks Mal some hard questions.

IF GOD BE FOR US
“Malcolm, why do you believe that God is against you?” Shepherd Book asked, knowing that Captain Reynolds didn’t want to talk about it, but he was determined to talk to him anyway.
“You do know about the battle of Serenity.”
“Yes. Of course I do. A person would have to live under a stump not to know about it.” Book was careful not to say any more.
“Then you know that no one could believe in anything after that.”
Book looked at him though he said nothing.
“We were young and we believed we would win because we were right and the right side always wins, doesn’t it?”
“Does it?” Book asked him.
“We’re on our own, Shepherd. That’s all there is to it. There is no god to come running in to save the day.”
“Do you think the other side thought they could be right too?”
“They weren’t.”
“That’s not what I asked you, is it?”
“I’m sure some of them did think they were right.”
“And some of them learned the truth as a result of that battle.”
Mal sighed. “Did they?”
Book looked at him a long time, a very long time. “Yes, Malcolm, they did.”
