When I too long have looked upon your face
Wherein for me a brightness unobscured
Save by the mists of brightness has its place,
And terrible beauty not to be endured,
I turn away reluctant from your light,
And stand irresolute, a mind undone,
A silly, dazzled thing deprived of sight
From having looked too long upon the sun.
Then is my daily life a narrow room
In which a little while, uncertainly,
Surrounded by impenetrable gloom,
Among familiar things grown strange to me
Making my way, I pause, and feel, and hark,
Till I become accustomed to the dark.
(Edna St. Vincent Millay)

Summary: Celeborn is alone.

ACCUSTOMED TO THE DARK

Celeborn watched the tall ship sail until it sailed over the horizon into the West. Suddenly there wasn’t quite enough light in the world. Galadriel was gone home at last.

He stepped slowly off of the dock. It was only then that he noticed how dull and colorless the world had become. He would have to get used to it. He had things left to do before he sailed to join her.

He thought back to the first time he saw her. She was golden and beautiful and so full of herself in Doriath back in their youthful days. He’d fallen in love with her the first time he’d set eyes on her. She’d married him a few years later and bore him a daughter. His heart still ached when he thought of Celebrian’s pain and her mother’s anguish. He hoped their reunion would be joyous. He would join them someday. He was sure that reunion would be joyous.

Celeborn mounted his horse and rode for Lothlorien. He wanted to say goodbye to their home before it died from her loss, before the last light of the elves went out in the world.
Before he became accustomed to the dark.
