COMING HOME
I moved back to Baker Street after Mary died. It seemed like the best thing to do. I could not bear to live in the home we shared when she was no longer there to greet me when I returned from the surgery at the end of the day. It was so cold and lonely without her.
The first morning at Baker Street, I was up early. Mrs. Hudson was up in few minutes after I rose with tea and a bit of breakfast.
“I’m very sorry about Mrs. Watson. She was a lovely person,” she said as patted my shoulder. “Mr. Holmes is very sorry too but he’ll never tell you so.”
I was reading the morning paper when Holmes awoke. He came into the sitting room in his dressing gown. He checked the teapot and poured himself a cup even though it was cold. He got part of the paper to read while he drank his tea.
“Welcome back to Baker Street, Watson. I – I am glad you are back. Not the why but still it is good to have you home.”
It was as close as I was going to get to condolences. It was enough.
