~~

She thought of him often. More often than she would ever admit to anyone. Even as she and Mr. Norton cruised their way to the Continent, Irene Adler Norton thought of Sherlock Holmes.

What a man!

He certainly hadn’t been as handsome as the tiresome King of Bohemia had been but to meet a man who was intelligent enough to almost outsmart her, well, that was an occasion indeed. They could have had such adventures!

She thought of the men she’d been with and in many more ways than anyone wanted to admit, one man was much like another but not this man, this Holmes. He’d known how to find out where she hid the photo. He’d known how to get to her. And he’d been a man she had liked in all his guises.

When she got to the continent, she wrote him another note.

My dear Mr. Holmes,

I have thought of you often since leaving London. I am sure that Wilhelm was glad that I no longer pose any threat to his marriage to that Scandinavian mare. I’m sure she will provide him many tiresome progeny.

If you ever tire of investigations, Mr. Holmes, I would love to have you join me in Paris or Berlin. We would have a grand time in the best homes in Europe, you and I. No one would even have a clue as to who we really are. We could retire and live like a King and Queen.

Ever yours,
Irene Adler

PS: I am sure you kept my picture. Do you like it?

She read the London papers every day, pouring over any account of Holmes and his investigations though it did seem that Inspector Lestrade got most of the credit. She knew better.

Her Mr. Norton met with an accident in Italy that left Mrs. Norton alone again and soon she changed her name back to Adler. She wondered if Holmes knew. She considered sending him a note but was sure that he followed her career as she did his. She performed onstage once in awhile if she needed money but her Mr. Norton had left her rather well off so she mostly traveled.

Going to London was a spur of the moment thing. She hadn’t planned it but here she was, on her way to Baker Street. She wondered what he would do. She stopped suddenly and ordered her cab back to her hotel, telling the driver to wait.

Once inside, she pinned her beautiful chestnut hair up and donned a suit with a proper men’s hat and even a pair of smallish men’s shoes then she returned to the cab. The driver raised an eyebrow but said nothing as he drove her to Baker Street again.

She knocked on the door with the head of her walking stick and waited while Mrs. Hudson answered the door. The older woman called up to Holmes, who uncharacteristically came down to meet his guest in the foyer.

“Good evening, Mr. Sherlock Holmes,” Irene Adler greeted him.

A smile twitched at the corner of his mouth and he rubbed his hands together almost gleefully. “Do come upstairs, sir. I am most anxious to hear your tale.”

So she did.
