STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT

The stranger sat in the bar, sipping his drink and watching people come and go, interacting with one another. He never spoke to anyone though he did get his share of looks from both men and women. He never smiled and when he made eye contact with a few, they turned quickly away, never sure why but feeling odd as they stared at the handsome man in the corner at a table all to himself.

The evening wore on and the crowd got rowdier and forgot about the quiet man in the corner. They drank and laughed and danced the night away.

But the stranger did not forget them.

He watched.

The moon rose out on the dark streets of the warehouse district.

He rose from his seat and weaved his way through the throng of bodies. The air outside was cool and fresh. He took a deep breath. The people in the warehouse were young and beautiful but they were not what he sought.

He began to walk down the street.

He had been alone for a long time, hunting the hills and woods near the town, but the isolation had driven him out and into the town itself. After being alone with his own thoughts for so long, everything seemed so noisy and crowded to him. The alcohol had gone to his head too.

He had felt his beast stir and knew he had to leave the club.

So here he was, alone in the street again, always on the outside looking in.

He was so wrapped up in his thoughts that he didn’t hear the other man approach.

“So you are alone too?”

He turned quickly and found himself staring into the most beautiful green eyes he’d ever seen. The rest of the face was beautiful too, almost feminine but not quite. The jaw was strong, masculine.

“Can I help you?” He willed the man to leave him before it was too late.

“I saw you in the club and I followed you. I wanted to meet you.”

“You should go back inside. I am dangerous.”

Green eyes smiled and touched his cheek with a warm hand. Evan jerked back, surprised at what he felt.

“But how did you hide yourself from me in there?”

The man shrugged. “I have been hiding for a long time, my friend.”

“I am Evan.” He started to hold out his hand but that seemed to be too impersonal so he touched the other man’s shoulder, letting his hand linger for a moment.

“My name is Michael.”

“What do we do now?” Evan had never thought past finding someone else like himself. He was at a loss.

Michael smiled. “The moon is full. You must feel it.”

“Yes, but I’ve been resisting it.”

“Stop fighting it. Let it penetrate, wash over you.”

Evan felt his body tighten, felt the wolf rising. He saw Michael begin to change, saw the beast in his eyes first. Neither said a word until two large grey wolves stood in the moonlit street.

Michael howled, a chilling sound to any who heard except for Evan. Evan simply answered in kind. Michael turned and ran toward the woods at the edge of town. Evan followed.

One lone person stood at the door of the club and watched them turn and run away. He sipped his drink. So he had been right. The man had not been human. And he had a friend. This could get interesting. He pulled out his cell phone and called someone.

“It’s me. Yes, I found them.”

He hung up and got his coat from the rack near the door. He was smiling as he left the building.
