For Sara
who I miss so much:
Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven, there was a little girl. Heaven was beautiful, all that anyone could ever desire. She loved living in the presence of God and his angels. There was no pain nor sorrow here, no hunger, no illness, no violence; it was perfect.
Almost.
She was lonely.
There were many children there. There were children of all colors and ages, some in sandals and tunics, some in frilly lace, some even in uniforms. She played with them often but she had no special friend among them.
She decided to ask God why she was lonely. Wasn’t this Heaven?
“Just be patient, little one, for you will find your special friend someday. I promise you this.”
She smiled and went upon her way, knowing that God would keep his word but wishing he would hurry.
She waited and waited, continuing to play with the other children and listening to the angel choirs sing. She picked flowers and ate ice cream. Sometimes she even helped Saint Peter at the Gates as he welcomed new people into Heaven. She wasn’t sure she was much help really, but Peter always smiled and welcomed her just the same, giving her a cherry lollipop for her help.
Even in Heaven, waiting is not easy for a child so she decided to go back and ask God again if her special friend was coming soon.
God smiled and nodded. “Yes, my child, your friend is coming soon. You must be patient and wait for her.”
She hugged him and went to see if Saint Peter was busy today. Not long ago, thousands and thousands of people came through the Gate almost at once and Saint Peter had been glad of her help that day.
Today he was alone, reading a scroll. He smiled as she skipped up to him.
“And how is my little Gatekeeper today?” He reached into his shimmering robes and came out with a sucker for her.
“I am a little lonely so I thought I would see if you needed some help.”
“We are not very busy today but I would love to have your company.”
They talked of cherry lollipops and ponies for awhile when the gates opened.
Inside stepped a girl, a girl older than the little girl, a teenager in blue jeans, a white t-shirt and flip-flops. Her hair was black with some funny auburn stripes in it. She clutched a stuffed kitty to her chest and looked around. She smiled at Saint Peter and the little girl.
“Welcome, my dear. We have been waiting for you.” Saint Peter held his arms out and hugged the new addition.
The little girl was a bit shy and hid behind him. She peeped out and the big girl smiled at her again.
“Hi. I’m Sara. What’s your name?”
The little girl stepped out. “I am Sara too and I spell my name with no H. Everyone is always getting it wrong.”
The new Sara laughed. “Me too!”
Little Sara shyly asked, “Will you be my friend?” She held her hand out to the bigger girl.
Sara simply took the child’s hand.
Saint Peter had to smile as they walked away and he heard the teen ask, “Do they have root beer here?”
And the little girl was never lonely again.
