Day 2 - Snowflake Challenge

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish history. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I got on the internet in the late 90s. I had never heard of fanfiction, fandoms or anything even close to that. I had heard of Trekkies – but then everyone had. My daughter got caught up in the CATS craze after the DVD came out in the late 90s and I sort of did too. After joining a couple of message boards and making some friends I moved on to Babylon 5 and I’ve kinda stuck there. I helped run a couple of groups here and there and have never gotten out of that fandom. I run a few of [personal profile] ruuger’s old groups still.

I saw a trailer for The Fellowship of the Rings – and was immediately enthralled. I had read Tolkien back in the 70s’s when I was a teen and couldn’t wait for the movies. I loved them and went hunting for information on Legolas, Aragorn and Boromir. And I found fanfiction, more specifically, slash fanfiction.

I joined a Yahoo group – an rps group I’m thinking and that group was one holy hell mess of fighting and nasty members who lived to put other fans and writers down. I soon left it and made my own group that allowed both RPS and character fiction of any rating and pairings. It was called LOTR Adult Fiction. That group grew into the website, Of Elves and Men, which is being preserved on Ao3.

Chris Evans convinced me that MCU was worth a look and I love writing Steve/Tony but I love the whole fandom.

And the main fandom is Star Wars. I seldom write Star Wars though I dearly love it. I love Classic SW better than the new stuff since Disney bought it. I enjoy the extended universe now forced to be called legends. In a time in my life that I didn’t know if I was going to make it, Star Wars got my through and I will always be thankful to Lucas for that.

And that’s it, I guess.

Wow, I've never even thought about Babylon 5 as a source of fanfiction. I guess it came out before I discovered the internet and it just didn't occur to me to look when I did.

I never did anything but lurk on the Yahoo groups and such because I couldn't figure out what the cultural rules were.

While writing my own Snowflake challenge entry, I was actually just thinking about how you're my oldest online friend since we first met before I joined LJ :) I still remember fondly those Babylon 5 groups that Mike Helba (?) used to mod, because they were my first experience of a real fannish community.
