SWEET SOLSTICE

Alexander wrapped the fur around him. Sometimes, no, lots of times, he wished he were home in Pella. It was so cold here in these mountains. He was sure some days that he would freeze to death before they ever got through them. It was easy to believe that Prometheus was chained to a crag here where the gods didn’t even dare to come.

He seldom saw Hephaestion. He was always either out front scouting or behind directing the supply lines. Alexander missed him, more every day. Bagoas was lovely and he pleased Alexander very much but he was not Hephaestion. He would never presume to tell Alexander that he was full of horse dung. Hephaestion did not often do so but now and again, he deemed it necessary. It was one of the things Alexander loved about him.

There were many more.

He was feeling quite sorry for Alexander when a page ran up to him.

“Your majesty, sir…”

“Yes, what is it?”

The youth stammered for a minute or two, making Alexander want to shake him but he stood still and waited.

“General Hephaestion, sir, is half a day’s ride. He will be here by nightfall.”

He nodded at the youth though his own heart leapt in his chest like a boy after his first love. He waited for the young man to take his leave and he laughed aloud, saying Hephaestion’s name as if it would hasten his arrival.

Alexander could not take his eyes from his companion. He had arrived dirty and dusty but he had come to Alexander before he did anything. He told him of the many things he had seen, of the strange tribes and customs of these people of the east. Alexander had finally made him go bathe and get something to eat before he fainted from exhaustion.

Hephaestion returned to him, smiling and a bit shy at first, finally asking for what he seldom did ask for. Alexander could never say no and he did not say no this time. He found what he always found only in the arms of his dearest friend. His soul found peace there.

They slept together all night, something they rarely did.

**

The morning dawned clear and cold. The snow had stopped and looked like a white blanket over all the world. Alexander wrapped his furs around him and stepped out into the chilled world. Hephaestion was gone when he had awakened but this was not an unusual thing. He always had many details to attend to when he returned from an expedition.

Alexander happened to remember that it was time for the winter solstice. It seemed fitting to celebrate such in the land of snow and ice.

“I brought you something.” Hephaestion startled him, coming up behind him. He handed him a bowl.

“It looks like snow.” Alexander certainly did not want to *eat* the stuff!

“Taste it. It is a treat I learned of at a small village in the mountains.”

Alexander tasted. It was sweet and creamy. He took another bite.

“Mmmm. This is wonderful.”

“It is snow mixed with milk and honey. The children in the villages beg for it every time the snow falls. I knew that you would like it. It is a fitting food for the winter solstice. And a fitting food for my king.”

As Alexander ate the sweet concoction, he smiled, thinking of how it was so like Hephaestion to think of him, to find something to make his life just a bit easier and brighter. He set his bowl down and reached for Hephaestion.

“You always amaze me. I think that never has one man been loved so well as I.”

Hephaestion smiled an almost sad smile. “You know that we never had a chance, Alexander. I was lost in you *and* your dreams the day I met you.” He didn’t say anything for a moment then he wrapped his arms around Alexander’s neck and whispered. “I would not have had it any other way.”
