Day 3 _ Random Love Post - Lord of the Rings

'It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door.'

I remember reading The Hobbit when I was 12 or so and being completely amazed from the first paragraph - when I read the trilogy, my amazement turned to more. It was like seeing a whole new world superimposed on this dull one. I've actually read very little fantasy since then because I'm not sure anyone could evoke that feeling in me again.

Then there were the movies. The movies are what got me into fandom, for the most part, and I've never left. Outside my hubby, my late daughter and my late mother, the most important people in my life are some of the friends I made through the LOTR fandom. And the moves were absolutely, stunningly beautiful.

I cannot hear this song without tears:

And I leave you with Bilbo's 'The Road Goes Ever On'
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I remember a stretch of time during which it felt like those movies were all that was keeping me going. I've really lost interest over the years, but there will always be a warm, fuzzy place in my heart for Lord of the Rings, especially "Fellowship."

I had the strangest feeling when I first read LOTR — I felt I already knew it, the world, the history, even though I didn’t as no-one in my family had ever read it, and there were no films back then even th Bakshi one! That feeling has never gone away, and nothing surmounts it for me. I will probably be writing it until I am unable to physically write more. It’ll probably be one of my last thoughts!

Yes, I struggled to find fantasy I liked after that; most were just creaking copies which were awful — although there are a few books I found I really liked, but not because they were like Tolkien, really, just because the writing was excellent!

It was only when I joined the online fandom I found other people who felt the same way, which was amazing; some of my family did read it after I nagged lol, but it was great to have a *lot* of people to talk to.

Hmm, no dragons and a desert, does not ring a bell. I have read all the Pern books.
