back from vacation!

It was a wild and whirlwind trip which I will need to make a longer, more photo-filled post at some point soon. But it was so necessary <33 We hit up 4 cities in England and 3 in Scotland this time and Scotland was suuuuuper fun. I got to pet a Highland cow! I didn't think about work like once! We walked like 20km a day though, so ouch. But worth it. We brought home tons of tea, tons of books, and some board games. It was actually one of the best vacations of my life, and I come returned refreshed with what I hope is a healthier perspective on a lot of things. I'm really excited to get back on track.

And!! I come home to see that so many exchanges have opened! I have a fun-filled reading weekend ahead :D

Fancake Theme for September: Food & Cooking

Photograph of steel spoons and spices in a dramatic setting with added text that gives it the look of a gourmet magazine cover: September 2025. Food & Cooking, at Fancake. Steel teaspoons are arranged in an elogated oval to suggest a fish, with the bowls acting as scales and some of the handles left visible to create the fins and tail, giving the creature a spiky appearance. The concave bowls are dusted with a powdery orange spice for color and one spoon at the front of the fish is filled with a coarse black spice to create an eye. The fish is on a black surface with a rough texture and around it are three skinny green peppers, a mound of salt, a mound of orange spice, and a dipping bowl filled with a clear amber liquid.

The Day in Spikedluv (Tuesday, Sept 2)

I did not go downtown today because I wanted to get some chores done before I went out to visit mom. I did two loads of laundry (washed, dried AND folded, as well as finished drying and folding yesterday’s load), hand-washed dishes, did a load in the dishwasher, pulled the crock pot pork for Pip’s supper, stopped by mom’s, and scooped kitty litter.

When I got home I hand-washed more dishes and cut up chicken for the dogs' meals (tomorrow; I like to get ahead of it).

I finished the Duncan Kincaid book and read fanfic.

Temps started out at 48.6(F) and reached 72.3. That was at 7pm when I got home, so I’m sure it was higher during the afternoon.

In stuff not about me or mom, Ian starts welding school today.

Okay, not an actual Vorlon, but either based on the Vorlons or inspired by the Vorlons. Who are the Vorlons and what does this have to do with Monomon the Teacher from the video game Hollow Knight? Follow along this analysis as we find out!

Late Writerly Ways

Because no one wants to hear about my boring day of being too tired for laundry and since I missed it on vacation, here's a late writerly ways.

But before that there's a few more days on [community profile] fandomgiftbasket and here is mine if you'd like to write me something or do a little art (Prodigal Son, Hazbin Hotel, The Amazing Digital Circus)

Only...I can't remember what I wanted to talk about. I do know that for me, finding stuff in museums is a good source for my stories. That said I am seeing a shift in my writing, more and more things are historical. Okay I've been writing historical for more than a decade but now almost everything I do is historical even if it's only in the 80s and 90s. And I'm not sure why. Is it my age? I don't believe it was better way back when (granted some of the 90s were better than what Trump's done to today). Then again I love history. I minored in it after all. Hmmm

A 2025 Experiment: Increasing fandom slots for nominations & requests

As we all start planning our nominations and requests, mods have been reviewing our rules around the number of fandoms that can be nominated and requested.

Traditionally, Yuletide has allowed participants to nominate a maximum of 3 fandoms to the tagset, with up to 4 characters each. We increased that to 4 fandoms in 2023 and got positive feedback about that change.

During signups, participants have been required to request at least 3 fandoms, and up to 6 fandoms if they choose. They must offer a minimum of 4 fandoms.

We've needed to limit the tagset size due to a combination of AO3 technical limitations as well as the logistical effort to confirm each fandom is eligible while avoiding duplicate fandoms. The good news is that we’ve found AO3’s tagset interface loads the moderation tools a bit faster lately. We've also developed more scalable processes and a group of wonderful, experienced volunteers to help with that checking. We think we can handle more nominations this year, but we won’t know until we try!

Change to nominations:

For 2025 only, we are going to increase the number of tagset nominations from 4 fandoms to 5 fandoms per person. The maximum number of characters will remain at 4 per fandom.

We’ll see how this goes, and whether the additional workload seems manageable to us, before deciding whether to keep the increased limit in 2026.

Change to requests:

For 2025 only, we are also going to increase the maximum number of fandom requests from 6 to 8. The minimum of 3 will not change. This means you must request at least 3 fandoms, and up to 8 fandoms if you choose.

Everything else remains the same: for each fandom, you will still be able to request up to a maximum of 4 characters. You will still be required to offer at least 4 fandoms with a minimum of 2 characters each.

Again, we will evaluate how it goes, and how this affects our workload, before deciding whether to keep the increased limit in 2026.

We hope this opens up some exciting possibilities for you in the 2025 round! Please stay tuned for our usual eligibility and evidence posts.

Piracy Bingo Fest 2025

Ahoy! From September 1-30, we have a fest dedicated to Piracy, both nautical and digital (and any other types you can think of?) Interpret these as broadly as you want and have fun! Feel free to remove any terms you don't like before generating a card. You can make a card with the Bingo card generator and if you want, add your fic to the AO3 collection. I've generated a 3x3 and 5x5 card for the Golden Age of Piracy and Digital Piracy, available under the cut. Read more... )

September posting, and Guardian Wishlist

I haven't been posting much lately - or rather, in a long while. In March I crashed pretty hard after a writing marathon, and then work got very busy for a very long time, so I spent several months putting almost all my energy into that. Until late May I kept thinking I could do more, fannishly, but after that I gave up on keeping up with anything other than the Guardian novel readalong on [community profile] sid_guardian. August has been (finally) back to normal at work, but the month just flew past before I could get back on my feet, never mind in the saddle. *g*

But this month I'm trying to make that happen. Writing more than alibi sentences: something I need to relearn, LOL.

And I'm trying to post more again here too, finally! My plan for that is twofold:
  1. post something every day of September, and

  2. because I keep feeling like I did literally nothing at all since April other than work, but that's not in fact literally true, I want to remind myself of that by posting about stuff I did do during these months.
Yesterday I got off to a good start by posting about the very last thing I did in August, namely watching Dongji Rescue.

For today, here's another thing I did do recently, together with [personal profile] china_shop: preparing for [community profile] guardian_wishlist! And then sign-ups just opened at the end of August:

A gifting fest for Guardian and related fandoms: guardian-wishlist.dreamwidth.org

I really love this fest. It's our Guardian-and-related-fandoms version of [community profile] fandomtrees (rules), and we're in our fifth year already, wow! I love that this fandom is still going strong. :D

Our schedule for 2025:
  • 28 August: sign-ups open - open now!
  • 5 September: first wishlists posted
  • 15 September: sign-ups close
  • 16 September: final wishlists posted
  • 6 October: gifts revealed
Wishlist reveals are on Reunion Festival/Mid-Autumn Festival, which is late this year. Hopefully I can actually get back in the saddle and write some significant amount of gifts in that time!

We already have 8 sign-ups! I haven't finished mine yet, but soon. Definitely hoping so see some more of you there as well! ♥ ♥ ♥

I had a great time at lunch yesterday with my niece, her husband, my ex brother in law and my two friends of my family, I only wish it had lasted longer. Also, the people who run my apt bldg are not going to fuck with my windows at all, I was very relieved to get that all worked out.
