Day 9 - Fandom Snowflake Challenge

Day 9
In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I never knew 'fandom' existed until I tumbled into it rather like Alice into the Looking Glass. There were several surprises that amaze me to this day.

One is not such a good thing. There are many who are your best friend one day then denounce you the next for reasons that they choose to never share with you. This has happened more than once. The only comment I have to those people is that I do make a formidable enemy. You will not see any of those folks around fandom.

This IS a good thing though - real friends. There are so many wonderful people out there who have become my real friends. I met them through fandom and loved them outside it. My best friends in the entire world came from Tolkien. These people have stood by me through sickness and death and many other things and we still are good friends.

I'm just glad that by the time I got into fandom most of the backstabbing and issues in my fandom were over, I hate all of that. After all, if you don't like something no-one's forcing you to read it and just because it's not one person's cup of tea doesn't mean that it isn't someone else's favourite story!

There are so many wonderful people in fandom though, people who are caring and generous, who'll make icons or write stories for complete strangers and who spend so much time on a story or piece of art so they can share it with likeminded people.

I'd never have imagined I'd get so much from fandom as I have :)
