Summary: Morning on the road to the east.

JUST ANOTHER DAY
Alexander had a hard time sleeping some nights, most nights as a matter of fact, so he was awake when Hephaistion joined him. He offered his friend a fig from the bowl in front of him.
“Would you like to go for a ride today? The sky is clear and Bucephalus needs a good run.”
Hephaistion nodded. “I think I shall ride the new white mare. She is full of spirit.”
Want to hear my letter from Mother? She has much news of home in this one.” Alexander placed a scroll on the table and began to read aloud.
Hephaistion was only half listening as he cut a chunk of cheese and popped it into his mouth. He enjoyed this part of the day more than any other, he thought to himself, this part before the intrusions of the world that Alexander chased so fervently. He loved quiet mornings best.
