THE PAIN BEFORE THE WOUND
Gil-galad checked his weapons one last time. This would be the last battle. He knew it in his heart. He had made his goodbyes and was ready to march.
He’d told Elrond how much he cared for him, how his life had been blessed the day that Maglor and Maedhros had brought young Elrond and Elros and left them with him and Cirdan to care for.
Cirdan had been next. He loved Cirdan as a son would love his father. All he was, he owed to Cirdan and his love and advice down through the years.
No one knew the last elf he went to see. He went to the Green Wood encampment to see Oropher. The two kings rode their horses down to the stream where they’d often met and talked.
“This is the end, my friend. This day will see the end of the war and maybe the end of us as well,” Gil-galad said.
“I fear that you are right but it will be worth it if the war goes well for our side.”
They sat by the stream and drank one last drink before parting, never to see one another on the shores of Arda again.
