HUNGRY HEART
Babylon was his at last!
He stood at his balcony and looked over the most beautiful city on earth. He knew he should feel triumphant, but he felt a bit hollow instead. He had focused his entire being on winning this prize since he had been no more than a child. And it was his.
“Hephaestion?” His friend had come out onto the balcony to join him. “I have done all I set out to do. I have conquered Persia. Yet—”
“-it is not enough,” Hephaestion finished for him.
Alexander leaned against him. “Why?”
Hephaestion laughed and wrapped an arm loosely around Alexander. “Nothing has ever been enough for you, my king, not since we were boys.”
“I know. I was hoping that this would satisfy me, would be enough.”
Hephaestion stole a kiss. It was seldom since they had become men that they indulged in pleasure with one another.
“All men want more than they have. You just want more on a grander scale than anyone else ever has. You have a hungry heart, my love,” he whispered as he leaned in for another kiss, “and you always will.”
They went inside and forgot Persia for a while.
