Ching Shih
I wasn’t going to include her but she was actually the most successful pirate of all time so here she is. She was born in 1775 and became a prostitute or a madame in Guangzhou. It is said that the pirate Cheng I fell in love with and sent for her and married her. They became business partners and their pirate empire grew to be the largest the world has ever known, continuing after Cheng I’s death. She had up to 300 ships and possible 80,000 men, women and children working for her.
No other pirate in history can claim such wealth and power.
She retired from pirating and lived the rest of her life very wealthy.
