WORTH THE RISK

Hephaestion lay awake in the narrow bed he shared with Alexander.

He was not yet so comfortable with his new friend that he was ready to share everything with him. He had been doing this for a few months. Sometimes it was all he thought about all day long. He loved the climactic moment when everything was forgotten in a wave of sweet bliss. It made all the stealth and risk worth it.

But tonight was different. He was sleeping with Alexander. He had only known the King’s son a few months before Alexander had chosen him to be one of his companions here in Mieza. He had never felt about anyone the way he did about Alexander though. He got a funny feeling when those dark eyes looked into his.

He worried about it all day. How was he going to be able to slip away without Alexander catching him? And if he did, could Hephaestion tell him the truth?

“Hephaestion, would you like to join us in our discussion? Or would you like to tell us what is so much more interesting that you pay no attention to today’s lesson.” Aristotle raised an eyebrow, causing his face to color.

“I am sorry, sir.” He offered no explanation even when the teacher seemed to be waiting for one. Some things one just could not explain to someone else. Finally, Aristotle went back to his lecture, shaking his head at the mystery of the teenage mind.

When they were in the gymnasium, he again stopped paying attention and Alexander defeated him soundly at wrestling, something that rarely happened. Hephaestion was taller and heavier than the younger boy and usually that gave him an advantage. Today, everything Alexander did reminded him of tonight.

He had merely smiled when the instructor tapped Alexander the winner and he’d congratulated him. When Alexander had asked him what was the matter, he just laughed and said he lost his concentration.

Now it was night. All the boys had gone to bed. Alexander was making a little sound when he breathed that convinced Hephaestion that he was finally asleep. The other boy had talked and talked tonight, about everything under the sun. Hephaestion thought he would never stop.

He threw the covers back and slipped out of the bed and out of the barracks.

”I thought I would find you here!”

Hephaestion looked up, startled, at Alexander. He smiled weakly.

“How did you know?”

“Because I’ve been watching you sneak in and steal one every night just like I do.”

Alexander lifted Hephaestion’s hand to his lips and took a bite of the sweet honey and almond pastry he had been eating. He grinned at Hephaestion.

“Besides, some things are worth the risk.”
