Last day of 30! I've run out of stuff to say long back! It's been fun and I may do it again soon... or maybe even in May, who knows? Maybe I'll have a theme then... any ideas?

Laters!

Let me preface this post by saying that the things in this post are about people in my offline life and not you guys.

There are few enough people in the world you can count on when things are normal but let some terrible tragedy happen and you find that many of those will disappear also. Since our daughter died in 2005, friends and family avoid us as though they are scared that something awful will happen to them just by being near us. They say they will do anything you need or help you but they don’t mean a word of it. It’s lips service, plain and simple.

The same happened again in 2008 when I became very ill and was in the hospital for 6 weeks. I can count on little more than one hand the number of people who helped Larry and me out. I can tell you each and every one who did and did not. For the most part, Larry took care of me alone. He came to the hospital every day but 2 of those six weeks. He sat alone in Intensive Care Waiting for days on end, he went from my room to mama’s every day to make sure the morons at NC Baptist Hospital didn’t manage to kill either of us and believe me, they tried.

When he came home, it was just me and him. Still is.

Don’t get me wrong. There are family members and friends who have been there too. They are few but they have been good to us. The rest… well, like Forrest Gump, that’s all I have to say about that.

This month is almost over! I've blogged pretty much every day even though some were just 'hi and bye's. I've also written a ficlet for every day this month too. Just check my fiction LJ at alexfic and my Dw one at [personal profile] alexs_storybook. You can read at DW without being a friend, I think.

We went to Lowe's for plants and dirt today. Got a few things planted and will do some more tomorrow. I don't have all that much endurance so I'm doing a little at a time. I still want to buy some more geraniums. I got 2 medium-ish ones today and hopefully can pick up a couple of larger ones next week. I need to kill some poison oak and some weeds in the yard and wash the porch but that'll wait til I can get someone to help. Larry or Shina will do!

If you all want to know what I do every day, I play Indiana Jones Adventure World at Facebook. it's a really fun game with missions that you go on. It's peopled with characters from the movies and you even get to go on missions with Indy himself but he won't help kill snakes! It's actually got me fangirling Indy again and I'm also watching the Young Indy movies. I've done a couple of ficlets and might try my hand at a longer fic once Big Bang is done.

Time to go watch some more TV with Larry! Night, all!

Today was busy in a good way. Well, it was busy this evening I guess.

I goofed around all morning then this afternoon I finally made some tomato relish type stuff with tomatoes, oil, vinegar, onions, thyme, salt and pepper. Not sure waht to do with it... maybe eat it as a salad, maybe make a cold pasta dish with it. Have several new recipes to try but they're all desserts so I'm waiting til Shina and the gang comes over.

We planted 8 tomato plants today and I potted some red begonias. I get the red begonias in memory of Sara, who loved the song Scarlett Begonias. Our little onions are growing too... they should be big enough to eat soon. I have some pepper seeds planted but I may buy a couple of plants just to be on the safe side. Hopefully we can get some squash plants and some more flowers this weekend. I don't think I'm going to have as many as I usually do. Going to get some larger potted geraniums, some impatiens bedding plants, some bedding petunias and perhaps I'll try some daisies again. Haven't had much luck with the daisies lately.

Did my bills while watching Missing with Larry. I gotta straighten my desk and wrap a book to send to [profile] luin77 tomorrow. I still gotta wriote today's ficlet too so I'll get on that in a few too!

Have a good night, everyone!

My father died 18 years ago today. It's shocking to me that it's been so many years. He was 61 years old. Sara was 6 and she mourned him the rest of her life. I will post more about him next month on his birthday. I might even unearth a few photos of him and mama.

We are pretty sure we know who broke into our basement. The why we don't know and what to do about it we don't know. I recognized the wire cutter they used to cut the screens. It didn't hit me until today that it was this person. I'm not afraid of him but I am angry, very angry.

On a related note, our alarm system will be installed next Wednesday. The initial installation is a bit pricy but the monthly fees are pretty cheap. I just hope I don't manage to set the alarm off all the time.

ON a side-ish note, we are thinking about going on a vacation soon. So far we are thinking Charleston, and perhaps the Myrtle Beach area. We are thinking of doing motel rooms each night instead of getting a condo. Then there's the mountains or day trips or... argh~!

Gotta go make some spaghetti noodles and stick some garlic bread in the oven! Have a good one!

Tired and heading to bed soon! Will post the last couple days' ficlets tomorrow too.

Just a drive by. Sick tonight... need to lose weight to get the strain off that hernia and need to stop stressing all the time. Sitting up because when I lay down, I get nauseous. It'll pass, I expect. Most things do.
alexcat: (Default)
It's pretty late and I've not done a lot today... I paid bills and worked on my grocery list. Larry and I talked about vacation but have not decided on where to go but it's looking a little like the beach and/or Charleston, SC. I need to look up some stuff to do in Charleston. Anyone know any stuff there?

Well, it's late and I'm heading to bed. Nighty1

I'm sorry I've been a slacker posting the last few days. Been really wiped out and the kids came last night too. I didn't even get my fic post done yesterday so I'll make two of those today.

We made hamburgers and veggies skewers last night on the grill and they were yummy. Shina and I had enough veggies to feed half the county but the 5 of us ate quite a lot of them. Lydian had her kindergarten screening yesterday so she's all set to go to school this fall. I can't believe she's already that old. I remember seeing her when she was less than 5 minutes old. I'll have to see if any of the pics I shot Easter came out. She's a moving target to photograph!

I'm glad to see lots of my friends are doing the 100 Things challenge. I do like to see what other people think and are interested in. We have Latin America, people, places, occult things, movies, books and more! Join if you haven't. Go here for details and a link to the sign-up: http://jdbracknell.livejournal.com/165714.html It really is a no pressure thing.

MY state has a referendum on marriage this May. Why I don't know because NC is one of the states that has constitutionally defined marriage as union of man and woman. :/ I'm seeing signs all over supporting the referendum and it puzzles me how two men or two women marrying could possibly undermine my own marriage. My mama said once she it didn't make sense that God would punish gay people for loving one another. She figured love was love.

But then she was rather progressive for her generation in this area. She was pro-choice. She said when she was in high school in the early 50's, girls from 'good'(moneyed) families were able to get abortions but poor girls ended up with babies they didn't want or couldn't care for or they got dangerous backroom abortions. She felt that at least with abortions legal, poor women got to choose too.

I didn't think I had much to say but apparently I had more than I thought.

Have a good day, y'all!

How do you feel about this?

How Authors Feel About Fanfiction

After reading them all, I have to laugh. Evidently authors are rather a stupid lot. They worry that fanfiction will infringe on their way to make a living. WHO THE FUCK DO THEY THINK BUYS THEIR BOOKS?

Having said that, I do not buy books new from authors who openly oppose fanfiction. I buy them used if I buy them at all. I have always encouraged fans to read the books in the Tolkien fandom as well as any other book fandom that I write in. We write out of love for their work but if they choose to be assholes, well, I don't have to read their crap.

One author was actually a fanfiction writer before she became published - Lynn Flewelling - yet she opposes fanfiction. Needless to say, I stopped reading her altogether. Let someone else buy her books.

There are many writers who do not oppose fanfiction and some even embrace it such as Katherine Kurtz and Storm Constantine.

Oddly enough they mention J.D. Salinger as an author who opposes fanfiction and who will actively sue you. His estate might but he's kinda dead. The ONTD article doesn't seem to know that. Maybe they can't read.

And of course, there is the queen. Ms. Rice. I've read rumors that she actually tracked down a fanfiction writer and sent them a box of dog poop as well as stories of her stalking fanfiction writers.

If I were published, I might feel differently but I hope I'd remember that every fan you alienate is one who will not buy your books or see your movies. I know as a fan, I feel that way.

Not a lot to say today. It's been cold and rainy here and I've not felt very well. I'll try to write more tomorrow. Night.

THis is a cheat post made on the 18th! :)
alexcat: (Default)
Sometime in the last few days, someone broke into our basement. They cut both screens and then broke a window and evidently crawled in. They took nothing but we have no idea if they came when we were home or away. They left their wire cutters and lots of footprints but our local sheriff's dept. doesn't investigate break-ins. They'll make a report so we can get our insurance to repair our windows.

I'm looking into getting an alarm system with the local phone company. Their prices don't look too bad and I'd feel a damn site better.

About ten years ago, we got broke into and they got the tv, Sara's Cds, Larry's guns, the dvd player, playstation and all the games as well as an entire drawer from my desk. It took forever to get that all replaced.

And I've been afraid down here ever since!!!

Trying to think of something to say today.

The Titanic sank 100 years ago today in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. She was a floating palace on her maiden voyage from England to New York. Over 1500 people died as the ship sank over two miles into the realm of legend. I read all the books I could find about the shipwreck when I was a kid and of course I saw the movie, the plot of which many romance novels had already been written. I think Bob Ballard is right... the ship should be left alone now, as a memorial and grave to those who died aboard her and in the waters around her.

I haven't done much today because I'm tired. Watched some tv and napped for a few minutes and played games at FB. Shina is supposed to come after while. she has no sense of time whatsoever... she said she'd call this morning about grilling and didn't call til 430 and we'd already had a very late lunch so they're coming over for dessert maybe sometime before midnight.

I still have done NOTHING on my [community profile] scifibigbang and have no idea what I want to do. But I'd better start soon! Maybe I'll go back to the Maeglin story. al;l suggestions would be considered! I ma having fun writing a ficlet a day though. Some might even be worth revisiting for a real story later.

That's about it for me. This week I will clean out something hopefully and get some more writing done and then shop some somewhere. I like to shop now and again. OOOH< and maybe plant some tomatoes and pepper in my tiny garden and maybe get some flowers!

That's it for me! Night!

I almost forgot today!

At 10 pm, I remembered that I needed to write my little ficlet and I needed to post to LJ.

Today, I cleaned and cooked. Then I ran to Janie's to hep her find a book on her Kindle! I found it in 10 seconds!

Larry finally got the mower running and mowed part of the yard. He'll do the rest tomorrow. The kids and Janie are coming for lunch Sunday. Ham, macaroni slad=, deviled eggs, rools and some unknown veggies. Yay!

I'll get the potroast and the ham recipe up at the Recipe community soonish!

Now I think I'll go watch... Grimm I think is what Larry DVRed. I like it... the boy that plays the Grimm is a bit dull but he's pretty and I love fairy tales!

SO long!
